In a year of change – innovation and growth to support the energy transition

As we approach the end of 2021, we can look back on a year at Baker Hughes Digital Solutions that is punctuated by growth, continued innovation, and new positioning to help our customers adapt and thrive in changing energy and industrial environments.

We have completed major acquisitions and forged new partnerships. We have brought important technologies to market, and we continue to invest in innovative solutions and new frontiers. These achievements support Baker Hughes’ vision to be an energy technology company. In particular, it supports the energy transition and the growth in industrial asset management that helps our customers consume less energy and other resources.

Among the largest such steps was Baker Hughes’ acquisition of ARMS Reliability to become part of Bently Nevada. This addition further expands Bently Nevada’s asset performance management portfolio (APM), not only by extending our expertise more deeply into balance-of-plant, but also into new industries, such as mining. An early win for this joint capability was a deal with renewable power leader ENEL.

Partnerships with purpose

We’ve also signed a number of agreements and established alliances with partners to deliver enhanced solutions, including a commercial alliance with Augury to further expand Bently Nevada’s APM capabilities. Similarly, Waygate Technologies, our industrial inspection solutions business, has been collaborating with Rolls-Royce to develop an ‘Intelligent Borescope’ that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to inspect aircraft engines, introducing a level of automation never seen before in the aviation industry.

Nexus Controls is working with LSI Controls and Enero Solutions to expand its portfolio of industrial automation and control systems, while Druck is increasing its footprint by signing two new commercial alliances: with Elite Sensors to grow in the motorsport sector, and with AAR Corporation to build reach in the aviation sector.

Similarly, Reuter-Stokes has partnered with Paragon Energy Solutions, a leading nuclear industry supplier to jointly bring comprehensive nuclear instrumentation solutions to the small modular and advanced reactor industry.

Embracing high-potential sectors

Waygate Technologies continues to innovate bespoke solutions for customers, including the Krautkr?mer Wheelstar, a specialized ultrasonic testing machine that is rolled directly under the wheels of Deutsche Bahn’s high-speed trains to inspect for material flaws in the wheels during maintenance, saving both time and effort. This solution is part of Waygate’s largest-ever multi-year contracts.

Druck and Panametrics have both expanded into new markets and grown their share in existing segments, with Druck bringing its pressure measurement and calibration technologies to the hydrogen economy; to smart cities, especially in China; and to the semi-conductor, nuclear and medical sectors. Panametrics has developed new customers for its critical measurement technologies and emissions management solutions in fields such as oil and gas, hydrogen, water and wastewater, healthcare, chemical processing, and food and beverage manufacturing.

Strategic bets for the future

Addressing the climate challenge is not only a strategic priority for Baker Hughes Digital Solutions, but equally important for our customers. This year, our continued investments in key technologies delivered a series of wins for customers. Baker Hughes’ broad emissions management portfolio provides customers with a range of advanced technology solutions, like LUMENTM Sky and LUMENTM Terrain, to detect, quantify, control, and reduce methane and other greenhouse gas emissions. Panametrics continued to refine its revolutionary flare.IQ emissions management solution so that upstream, as well as downstream, operators can benefit from accurate flare emissions monitoring.

Waygate Technologies leveraged state-of-the-art robotics to develop a new inspection and cleaning service, BRIC (Boiler Robotic Inspection and Cleaning), for industrial boilers that eliminates physical risk to inspectors, provides more precise data, and dramatically cuts inspection costs.

Advanced crawler robots for industrial inspection

A new distributed control system from Nexus Controls, the Nexus OnCore? Compact Control System, now offers full control, but in a compact form factor, ideal for industries such as wind farms. Bently Nevada is enhancing its plant-wide System 1 integrated APM solution by enabling it for the cloud, thereby giving customers easier access, greater visibility, and more control.

Druck engineers improved the world’s fastest pressure controller, PACE CM3, with four new pressure ranges to provide greater flexibility, alongside high-accuracy, speed, and stability.

Process and Pipeline Services (PPS) achieved a major success milestone in support of a landmark subsea development in the Caspian Sea. The PPS team worked on critical pre-commissioning work for this project and earned commendation from the operator for safety and on-time delivery.

It’s always about people

Before I close, I would like to talk about the people across our Digital Solutions business units, as well as the extended teams we work with - our partners, suppliers, and customers. The past two years have highlighted like never before, that we cannot succeed without great people and without effective teamwork. I want to express my gratitude for your partnership, and I look forward to our continued collaboration in 2022 and beyond.

To all my colleagues, thank you for your hard work, the passion to succeed, and dedication to ensuring quality, safety, and innovation throughout this challenging period.

It is your good work that enables us to deliver peace of mind to the world’s infrastructure and support the broader Baker Hughes mission to take energy forward.
