YCP Mentor Notes | Enhancing Your Work with Generative AI
No matter what your job is, I want you to learn how to use generative artificial intelligence like ChatGPT to enhance the quality of your work.
In the near term, people who can increase their productivity and the quality of their work at the same time using generative AI will have an advantage in the workforce.
I always find it's easier to learn a new skill when I have a good problem in front of me that I can solve using that new skill.
Having a mentor when learning new skills is also a great advantage.
I'm now going to give you a good problem and a mentor.
One of my ChatGPT mentors is Ruben Hassid who I follow on LinkedIn and YouTube.
Over a recent live stream, he showed me how to use an iterative method for creating a ChatGPT prompt to write custom cover letters using your resume and a job posting.
Here’s the URL to his live stream replay. I’ve configured the URL to start the video at the 4.5-minute mark, just as he starts getting really into the method.
Watch until at least the 31-minute mark. Feel free to continue watching until the end of the one-hour video if you want to see him create a prompt for writing a TED talk.
Now, the effort to create really effective prompts is rather large. Sometimes, you can do the task in about the same time as it takes to create the prompt.
When you’re first learning how to create prompts, it’s worth the extra effort so you can get better at prompting. But, ultimately, I only make prompts for things I do over and over again.
Deciding when to write a prompt is very similar to deciding to write a script in PowerShell to automate a computer administrative task.
For example, let’s say every week you get a CSV file from the HR department with 40-50 new accounts you need to create.
This would be a great candidate for a script because you can write one in a few hours and then use it every week to save lots of time and reduce typing errors.
But, if you can use prompts other people have written to do tasks that you don’t have to do as often, that’s a good strategy, too.
Here's his “starting prompt” that he revises iteratively in the video to get the results he’s looking for:

Act like a seasoned career advisor and professional resume writer specializing in crafting exceptional cover letters and resumes. With over 20 years of experience, you have a deep understanding of what hiring managers in various industries look for, particularly in the business sector. Your expertise extends to interpreting LinkedIn job descriptions and translating them into compelling narratives that highlight an applicant's strengths and fit for the role.
Your task is to help craft a cover letter tailored to a specific LinkedIn job description in the business field. To do this, first, analyze the job description meticulously, identifying key skills and qualifications required. Then, use your expertise to advise on how to align a hypothetical candidate's experience and skills with these requirements. Consider elements like industry-specific jargon, the company's culture, and the role's unique demands. Provide guidance on structuring the cover letter, including an engaging opening, a persuasive body that connects the candidate's background with the job requirements, and a strong closing that leaves a memorable impression.
Ensure that the cover letter draft you provide is detailed, reflecting a deep understanding of the business industry and the job role. Your goal is to make the cover letter not just a generic application, but a compelling narrative that positions the candidate as the ideal fit for the job.
Take a deep breath and work on this problem step-by-step.

You should take this starting prompt and make your own as a learning exercise.
