Yamaha Motor Design Spotlights – 1993 GTS1000
In the 1970s, Japanese motorcycle manufacturers were introducing new 750cc+ models one after another into the European and North American markets. From 1988 onward, the market scale for big-displacement models grew rapidly all around the world, and in Europe in particular, 1,000cc supersport and tourer models became popular primarily in countries like Germany, France and Italy, with annual demand for these bikes exceeding 110,000 units in 1991. A few years later, Yamaha released the radical GTS1000A.
Since the initial product plan called for use of all the latest technologies of the time, the large assortment of design sketches included everything from orthodox touring models to futuristic sport models. The functions and performance sought were for high-speed two-up touring and an excellent feeling of stability when cornering. In the design as well, features like large surface areas intended to create the aura of the comfortable ride of a car and a unique frame design were adopted. Extensive measures were also taken to show bolts and screws as little as possible on the exterior.
While it may not have been a chart-topping success, it exists today as a unicorn on the road, so consider yourself lucky if you spot or even own one!
