X’s new AI image generator will make anything from Taylor Swift in lingerie to Kamala Harris with a gun
Elon Musk's xAI has introduced Grok, a new AI image generator integrated with the X platform (formerly Twitter), allowing users to create and post images from text prompts. However, the rollout has proven chaotic, with users generating controversial and offensive content, such as images depicting political figures like Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in disturbing scenarios. Despite Grok claiming to have guardrails to prevent harmful or inappropriate content, users have easily found ways to bypass these restrictions, leading to a surge of troubling images circulating on X.
The lack of effective safeguards in Grok is particularly concerning as the platform faces increasing scrutiny from regulators in Europe and the UK over content moderation practices, especially with the upcoming US elections. While other AI image generators like OpenAI’s DALL-E have stricter content policies and watermarking, Grok’s lax approach raises significant concerns about the spread of misinformation and harmful imagery, further complicating the already contentious landscape of social media regulation.
