XERISCAPING IN PHOENIX
BY LACEY NIX | ANGIE'S LIST PHOENIX MAGAZINE | APRIL 2013
Craig Rawlings, owner of A-rated AZ NativeScapes in Chandler, says many of his clients choose xeriscaping to cut down the time they spend on lawn maintenance. "Desert plants don't grow fast, drop leaves or have to be trimmed often," Rawlings says. Typical landscapes use around 600 gallons of water a month watering while xeriscapes use an average of 70 gallons a month in the first two years and even less once they're established, he says.
After the plants are established, Rawlings suggests watering them no more than once a week, depending on the rainfall. Rain and an average of five supplemental waterings a year usually provide enough water for them to survive. Experts recommend drip irrigation systems or soaker hoses for watering because they deliver water directly to the base of the plant.
