X-Mark's "The Spot"- The Crunkleton
My first highlight for X-Mark’s “The Spot” is quite literally my favorite spot in Chapel Hill.?The Crunkleton is a local “institution” that creates an atmosphere that is cool. It elicits feelings of a speakeasy because it feels like a refuge from the craziness of everyday life. It envelops you in a warm feeling as soon as you enter; low lighting, wood and leather design elements, intimate seating that’s also wicked comfortable and the bar with a wall of every liquor imaginable. This is the place where you can ask for a Miller High Life or a dram of Glenmorangie and be in good company.
Owner Gary Crunkleton spent his college days at UNC moonlighting as a bartender to the thirsty masses. His cocktail craftmanship skills became more refined over time and his personality was that of a true host of hosts, so he decided to open his own bar. He told me, “I knew I loved talking with people about all of the things going on in their lives but didn’t realize how delicate a role spirits make as a bridge between the bar guests, authentic hospitality and me. It is a true privilege to serve guests at the bar.” What he created is a place that is truly special. Signature cocktails, collections of rare and curated spirits and a staff that respects the craft with enthusiasm and passion.

My wife has a far more refined palate than I do when it comes to scotch or bourbon. I am secretly a lightweight and prefer mixed drinks. G could sip bourbon like a champ whereas I would be on the floor. What I love about the Crunkleton is that I can get my frilly drink and she can get Oban straight up. My personal favorite as of late is the Pain Killer. It immediately transports me straight to the Bahamas with the pineapple, coconut and rum. The Edlerflower Sour is a strong runner up and perfect relief to the south’s summer heat. This is a place to create intimate moments or to celebrate in a large group. It’s the kind of place where you can have deep discussions or rabble rouse about your favorite basketball team. It is my favorite place to have a drink and let the world pass by sitting at the front window which many nights is wide open.
