PFAS – The “Forever Chemicals” Finally Getting Real Attention

During my own career, I have seen 3M discontinue PFOS-containing Scotchguard at the insistence of the EPA in the early 2000’s, the voluntary withdrawal of “C-8” PFAS by industry – again at the insistence of the EPA – in the early 2010’s, and now growing agitation to eradicate PFAS entirely.?Why did it take so long to get the message through??Maybe it was a branding issue all along, as described in the attached FastCo piece quoting Joseph Allen on how they have now come to be known as the “Forever Chemicals.”

H2 Transport Finds a New Way

Mixing Natural Gas and Hydrogen in the same pipeline and then “de-blending” them at the destination could leverage existing infrastructure to accelerate conversion to the “Hydrogen Economy.”?As Wind and Solar gain traction in providing “Green Hydrogen” and Gas Turbine filling the gaps in intermittent sources, creative infrastructure solutions have become more urgent and realistic.?This piece describes a plausible scenario that could put the delivery systems in position to outpace the fast-growing hydrogen production sector.

American Industry Stepping Up for Battery Sustainability & Energy Security

A major downside to the conversion to Battery Electric Vehicles is the difficulty in getting the Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel and other Battery Active Materials from around the world.?These extractions often have negative environmental externalities in themselves and leave the major vehicle manufacturers in North America and Europe at risk from vulnerable supply chains and dependence on Chinese imports.?The attached Reuters piece shows how incentives in the US Inflation Reduction Act are empowering US and Canadian companies to invest in recycling operations that recover nearly all of the value of these materials – more re-use than re-cycle – and bolstering US energy security in the process.?

Wildfire Smoke – Health Effects and How to Manage it

Attached is a summary of the “Creating Clean Air Spaces During Wildland Fire Smoke Episodes” web summit hosted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information of the National Library of Medicine division of the National Institutes of Health.?Whew.?That name is nearly as ambitious as the agenda and content of the attached summary that considers the sources, health effects, and mitigation measures related to smoke from wildfires and the PM2.5 particulate they contain.?This is an effective reference for anyone interested in Indoor Air Quality, Vehicle Indoor Air Quality / Cabin Air, and Health Effects of Environmental Contamination.?

Filtration Education from the Waterloo Filtration Institute

Last week I was pleased to participate in the Waterloo Filtration Institute’s webinar on Engine Air Intake and Cabin Air Filtration.?In this comprehensive session we talked about the history of air filtration and how it has evolved with engine architecture and the regulatory and cultural priorities in different regions.?And this week we covered Engine Lube Oil, Fuel, and Hydraulic Filtration, again putting advancements in these areas in historical context, and looking to the future for new opportunities for the Filtration Community to support the transition to a post-carbon economy.?Links to each of these sessions are below.?
