Happy Snake Year! ??
?? GONG GONG GONG! Yesterday marked the start of Lunar New Year celebrations, a major event across Asia lasting 7 to 15 days.
2025, ruled by the Wood Snake, promises transformation, creativity, and growth—a perfect year to innovate and move forward!
In this special edition, we’re heading to Asia - with a first stop to the moon : exploring artists, studios, brands, and trends that are celebrating this symbolic year in style.
Let’s explore the lunar calendar ????
Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which is based on the solar cycle, the lunar calendar ??follows the phases of the Moon: new moon ??, first quarter ??, full moon ??, and last quarter ??. It shapes the traditions of many cultures, including the Chinese calendar (for Lunar New Year), the Islamic calendar (used for Ramadan), and the Hebrew calendar (for Jewish holidays).
To keep track of the lunar cycles, we’ve selected stunning lunar calendars designed by 2 enthusiasts, in Istanbul, blending science and celestial events. We love their minimalist style and cosmic connection.
These snakes bring New Year cheer! ??
We fell in love with the quirky and expressive snakes of Chinese artist Fireye峰. Funny, tearful, inflatable, and full of personality, they bring to life playful scenes of the Chinese New Year rituals.
This whimsical series of cartoon-style illustrations captures all the Lunar New Year essentials: firecrackers, red envelopes, festive food, gold coins, traditional outfits, paper banners, luck, and fortune. Fireye’s childlike, offbeat, and modern style adds a fresh twist to these timeless traditions.
Have a Hard Year | Kobe | Nike ??
Many brands are celebrating the Year of the Snake, but Nike caught our eye with a bold message: "This isn’t the year of the snake. It’s the Year of the Mamba. Have a Hard Year." Nike challenges pushes athletes to embrace struggle as the path to greatness—on and off the court.
It embraces Kobe Bryant’s "Mamba Mentality"—pushing limits, embracing challenges. A mindset that made him a legend. At SQLI, as basketball fans, we’re proud to work with FIBA—and yes, we’d love a pair of Kobe 5 Protro… if only they weren’t exclusive to China! ??
Loewe celebrates Lunar New Year with Cloisonné and Snake dance ??
The other brand that caught our attention is Loewe with an exclusive Lunar New Year capsule, blending Chinese cultural heritage with modern luxury.
What we love about this campaign is the beautiful blend of arts and craftsmanship. From cloisonné to dance, shadow puppetry, and hand-crafted kites, Loewe brings tradition and creativity together in a stunning tribute to the Year of the Snake.
The hidden side, a source of creativity ?
The latest initiative that we particularly appreciated was the Reverso Tribute Enamel ‘Snake’: an ode to the enamelling and engraving professions to celebrate the year of the snake by Jaeger-LeCoultre.
We already particularly liked the Reverso model, with its pivoting case. We like that they used the hidden side, as a source of creativity. This piece embodies a remarkable expression of the virtuosity of the master enamellers and engravers in the Manufacture's Métiers Rares? workshop.
