Imagine finally going to the trek that you always dreamt of which you had been postponing for the last decade because you couldn’t get a long leave

Hold that thought in your mind while you read this article :
Pre-pandemic (2017), I had written an article about how we can exist in a world with virtual workspaces?Work from Wherever you Want.?
The pandemic did take the world by a storm and forced the hand of majority of workplaces to switch to virtual and now they are set out to achieve an equilibrium in terms of Hybrid.?
The one priority pandemic brought to the fore is the awareness of mental health and the importance of keeping self-care first. It saw people making unconventional choices when it comes to their priorities, whether it be taking a career break or pursuing a passion.?
Consequently, the emerging theme for workplaces is now ‘Flexibility’ which earlier used to be a perk but now has become and inherent expectation from employees and now a lot of terms are seeing the news which were almost unheard-of pre-pandemic ‘Hybrid workplace’, ‘Gig work within the organization’ and ‘Dual employment within reason’.?
This is where I would like to take in a concept of ‘Work Whenever you Want’ and I mean this in the true sense of the word. Of course, most organizations boast of flexible work which means, you work for 9 hours + but you chose when those 9 hours start, isn’t it??
I am talking about the future of flexibility, ‘Work Whenever you Want’ in its truest spirit! What does that mean??

‘I want to go for treks in winters so I will work from April to November’?
‘My health is not supporting me so I will work for only 4 hours every day’?
‘I will not have a fixed schedule at work. I will just commit to deliverables, just let me know’?
‘My career in dance is picking up so I will work only 3 days a week’?
How do the above sentences sound??Novel, right? This is what I am talking about!?
This simple means we will get to choose when we work and we are not answerable to anyone at a time when we choose not to work. A no questions asked free time! No need to check those messages constantly, carry your laptop everywhere and take those ‘unavoidable one-off meetings’?
It doesn’t matter why you are seeking the flexibility, and it will truly be your personal time - Work Whenever you Want?
This also naturally adds multiple layers of complexity for the employers. I will be talking about the same and other aspects of this flexibility in subsequent articles in this series.?
Till then, CIAO!?

2 年Hello Anusha, absolutely agree with you on the need for flexibility in India. However, now that I have first hand experience on systems in some European countries, all the flexibility scenario's that you have spoken about is already a reality, for a long time now. However, for this to be a reality in India, there are many more factors which needs to come together, apart from organizational systems. Generous unemployment coverage, at least livable wages even in the lowest earning role, demand vs supply of human resources, societal acceptance, family structure, relooking at career aspirations, seasonal industries, stable & growing economy and many many more. Until these factors come together, in my view, the espoused flexibility will be very limited to some high paying creative work! In the meantime, companies can get away with baby steps in this direction without the need for true transformation.
