WTF is Feminism?!

It's FRIDAY! I'm a FEMINIST! It's time again for ? FEMINISM FRIDAY ?
Did you know we've been celebrating feminism every Friday for over a year now? That's right, my little lady brain has managed to come up with over fifty two insightful feminist thoughts to inspire, motivate, and, in a lot of instances, annoy you lovely lot.
Let's take it back to basics this week and talk about what FEMINISM actually is. I've had this explained to me several times over the last year or so, often by women who don't like my 'brand' of feminism, but more so by men who want to tell me how to fight for equality while they do fuck all about it ??.
I've always been a controversial character. And so for me, if I can use some of that rebellious rhetoric to get conversations started about a specific gender issue, then I'm always up for doing so. Kicking off conversations and getting people thinking about equality is often half the battle. And so if I sometimes throw in a 'ugh, men are misogynists' comment to rile you all up, well, I've done my job.
I'm not here to state that women are better than men. That's not what I fight for. It's not what I believe in. I think individuals have their own strengths. In fact, I'd really like to see society take a more meritocratic approach whereby social issues don't stand in the way of awesome people being able to do awesome things.
But until systemic patriarchy (and other social issues) can be dismantled, that's not the world we live in.
So my brand of feminism might annoy some of you, and that's totally fine. Because living in a society where women are overlooked for roles because it's a boys' club, where girls are discouraged from entering 'male' industries, where female athletes are sexually assaulted in front of millions, where domestic violence statistics point heavily towards men being dangerous, where sexual harassment in the workplace is rife, where the gender pay gap exists, where the gender confidence gap exists, where the gender leisure gap exists... kind of annoys me.
So shall we call it even?

1 年As you're in SA, it reminded me of the billboard that I used to drive past to get to the office in Joburg, advertising steak, eggs and a strip show for R100 ?? I went to an all girls school and didn't realise how much of a challenge women in the outside world were facing until I landed at Uni. I've been lucky to find allies during my working life so far.
