WRN Newsletter 043
On October 16th, in honor of Global Ethics Day 2024, the World Ethics Organization (WEO) hosted a groundbreaking workshop with the support of the World Referral Network (WRN). Global Ethics Day is an annual event founded by the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs that promotes ethical awareness and discussions worldwide.
This year, WEO partnered with the Art of Science Learning and the Leadership Toolbox to deliver a special workshop by Harvey Seifter. Seifter is a globally recognized leader, organizational creativity expert, and art-based experiential learning expert. The event was hosted by Jesan Sorrells, CEO and Founder of the Leadership Toolbox, a platform dedicated to addressing organizational challenges through leadership development.
Participants were immersed in an innovative problem-solving exercise, where they worked in breakout groups to address an ethical dilemma. The catch? They used drawings to brainstorm and arrive at a solution. This creative, art-based method not only proved to be an eye-opening approach to problem-solving and consensus-building but also left a profound impact on all attendees, inspiring them to think differently about ethical challenges.
The World Referral Network remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting ethical business practices, and this workshop highlighted the power of thinking outside the box and employing innovative strategies to reach consensus on ethical challenges.
Networking Tip of the Week
How to Gracefully Exit Uncomfortable Conversations
We’ve all been there—stuck in a conversation that feels awkward or unproductive. The key is to exit gracefully while maintaining professionalism.
Try saying something like, “It’s been great chatting with you, but I want to make sure I connect with a few others before the event ends.” You can also offer to reconnect later, saying, “Let’s continue this conversation another time.”
Always thank them for their time, and politely excuse yourself. This approach leaves a positive impression while freeing you to move on to more valuable networking opportunities.

Leave Politics at the Door and Avoid Turning Networking
into a Debate Club
Elections are popping up everywhere—US Presidential, provincial in BC and New Brunswick, and maybe even a Canadian federal election! It’s hard not to get pulled into the political buzz, especially at business events. But trust me, discussing politics at a networking event is like bringing a porcupine to a balloon party—not the best idea.
First off, political opinions are like snowflakes: no two are the same, and they tend to melt down pretty fast when things heat up. Bringing up politics can turn that friendly handshake into an awkward shuffle backward. Alienating potential business contacts? That's a networking nightmare waiting to happen!
Secondly, politics is like a spark in a dry forest—one tiny comment, and suddenly you're in the middle of a wildfire debate. Not exactly the vibe you're going for when you're trying to make a good impression. It could completely blow up the positive mood and make everyone wish they’d stuck to safer topics... like, well, anything else.
Lastly, you're at a networking event to connect, collaborate, and maybe land some deals—not to audition for a political talk show. Keep your eyes on the prize, and don’t let a political detour derail what could have been a great business conversation.
So, if the urge strikes to chat about the latest political circus, just ask, “What exciting projects are you working on?”—it's way safer, and no one's going to throw a pie at you for it!
