Writing Tip of the Week
Politically Correct?
Politicians throughout the world often publish books under their own names. With few exceptions – Churchill comes to mind – they hire ghostwriters to handle the work. There’s a good reason for that. When left to their own writing skills they have proven themselves to be, shall we say, lacking in the necessary abilities to put together words in a coherent way. For example:
“If Lincoln were alive today, he’d roll over in his grave.” Pres. Gerald Ford
“Those who survived the San Francisco earthquake aid, ‘Thank God, I’m still alive.’ But, of course, those who died, their lives will never be the same again.” Sen. Barbara Boxer
“I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy. But that could change.” Dan Quayle
''If we do everything right, if we do it with absolute certainty, there's still a 30% chance we're going to get it wrong.'' Joe Biden
“For the first time in history, profits are higher than ever before.” Pres. Lyndon Johnson
“There’s no question that the minute I got elected, the storm clouds on the horizon were getting nearly directly overhead.” Pres. George Bush
"We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good." Hillary Clinton
“Democracy used to be a good thing, but it has now got into the wrong hands.” Sen. Jesse Helms
“The cup of our trouble is running over, but, alas, is not yet full.” Sir Boyle Roche
"We're not going to be disrespected. We have to get something out of this. And I don't know what that even is." –Rep. Marlin Stutzman
“Elevate those guns a little lower.” Gen. Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Mobile
“Capital punishment is our society’s recognition of the sanctity of human life.” Sen. Orrin Hatch
"R-S-P-E-C-T." Barak Obama
“People say I’m indecisive, but I don’t know about that.” Pres. George H.W. Bush
“Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country.” Mayer Marion Barry
“That’s the most unheard-of thing I ever heard of.” Sen. Joseph McCarthy
As serious writers we should study the alleged-wisdom of the political class and what passes for serious writing coming from their pens and papers, keyboards and laptops and for a very serious reason – so that we don’t inflict the same literary damage on an unsuspecting public.
