Writing Stages

There are several differences between Large-Scale and Small-Scale revisions. Large-Scale revisions involve looking at the paper as a whole and deciding if there are any major changes that need to be added. For example, the writer may need to “provide (more) evidence, define terms, or add an entirely new step”?(Dartmouth) to their reasoning. In the name of improved ideas or structure, the author could decide to either restructure or re-write the entire paper!

In contrast, Small-Scale revisions zoom in to examine parts of the paper. Examples of parts that are revised in Small-Scale edits can be the introduction or an argument in a paragraph. Once the section is revised, the entire paper is read through to make sure the new revision meshes in with the flow of the entire piece.

Although they might appear similar, editing and revising have different functions. While revising looks at the paper in its entirety, editing focuses on smaller issues relating to removal of words, sentences, and paragraphs. Editing also has the purpose of enhancing the experience for the reader. The writer ultimately wants to make the reading experience enjoyable with thought-provoking and understandable content.

Proofreading is a vital part of the writing process that authors cannot skip over. During this phase, it’s important to slowly read through the document to catch any mistakes such as “punctuation errors, spelling errors, subject-verb agreement, its/it’s confusion, their/there confusion, and so on”?(Dartmouth). Two effective methods of proofreading are printing a hard copy of the document and reading it out loud. The printed copy allows greater visibility to errors than a digital version does and reading the paragraphs out loud often uncovers sentence structure issues that otherwise may have gone undetected.?
