Writing & Self-Publishing Humanist Manufacturing

My Breakthrough Idea

In the fall of 2019, I enrolled in the Recognized Expert course offered by Dorie Clark. The idea is that you become a recognized expert so that people seek you out instead of the work required to secure customers as an unknown. While the work over the past five years has brought me recognition, it has not landed me any consulting work. An aspect of the course is to develop breakthrough ideas, where mine was to create a strategic framework that engages all stakeholders by “focusing on their current strengths and opportunities to create a vision of future aspirations that results in a sustainable future.”

I’m going to write and . . . it’s not to create ideas that are going to be collecting dust on a bookshelf, but to have an impact on the world. ― Dorie Clark

We Write Books

The most significant value gained from the Recognized Expert course is that all who take it become members of an incredible community. With at least 800+ members, this group highly supports one another and shares invaluable insight. A common theme is that members write a book as a part of the work to become recognized. I was no exception in writing Humanist Manufacturing: A Humanitarian Approach to Excellence in High-Impact Plant Operations. Like Clark, I set out to write a book that would impact the world.

The Self-Publishing Route

I had the good fortune to present to a faculty group today about my book writing process. One participant asked me why I chose to self-publish. My answer was two-fold: 1) I am at a point in life where I want to avoid the significant time and energy to secure a publishing contract, and 2) no publisher would like to work with someone with the narrow niche my book addresses. Self-publishing was the logical choice for these and other reasons.

My Writing Strategy

I went into the writing process, understanding I was not developing a best-seller. I estimated that I might sell a hundred copies, which, to date, still seems attainable. I wrote a weekly blog post that would be content for the eventual book. In January of 2025, I will have written each week without fail for five years. Additionally, I could see what feedback I received on the content I was writing each week throughout the development of the book content. It has also led to recognition as a LinkedIn Top Voice awarded to .5% of their approximately 800,000 US members. I was also recognized this week as No. 6 on their Top 50 Global Thought Leaders and Influencers on Manufacturing 2024.

My Humanist Manufacturing Framework

What I hope is my impact on the world is the humanist manufacturing framework I developed. It boils the book down into one graphic, as seen below. Ultimately, it is an A-Z approach to moving from a manufacturing operation's current state to becoming a human-centered manufacturer. One where doing the right things environmentally and socially has mounting evidence that it is also a more profitable approach.

Key Takeaways

My breakthrough was creating a strategic framework that engages all stakeholders by “focusing on their current strengths and opportunities to create a vision of future aspirations that results in a sustainable future.” I set out to write a book that would impact the world. In the book, I found that doing the right things environmentally and socially in a manufacturing setting has mounting evidence that it is also a more profitable approach.

My Gratitude

I thank Dorie Clark for developing and delivering her Recognized Expert course. I also sincerely appreciate the many community members who have inspired and lifted me to new heights of success. Amazing things are possible when we surround ourselves with supportive people.

Humanist Manufacturing Course

My humanist manufacturing book describes my approach to human-centered leadership. To explore my humanist manufacturing framework, I encourage you to sign on to the free course below:

  • Humanist Manufacturing Overview (Free) - The course introduces the humanist manufacturing framework. Some warm-up questions help students determine if they need to change their approach to manufacturing leadership. It introduces the humanist commitments that are the foundation for the framework and evidence of the need to alter the typical approach to manufacturing. There is also an introduction of six additional courses that guide the student through implementing each phase of the humanist manufacturing framework.

The leader should begin by developing a communication plan to keep all organizational stakeholders informed about the actions taken to create the organization's strategy. The reality of working to optimize the opportunities for a collection of diverse stakeholders is a complex task. Using social intelligence will enhance the development of a strategic plan in collaboration with company stakeholders.
