Writing is Not My Strong Suit

Raise your hand if you really don't like writing. Now raise your hand if you would have someone else do it for you if that was an option. Well, it seems to me that AI is providing just that opportunity to allow something else to do the work for you. However, I am not convinced that it is the only or best way.

Writing is one of those things that people seem to shy away from, mostly because they don't think they are good at it. It could be that they are not good at spelling, or they can never seem to find the right vocabulary word. Perhaps it is just the flexibility needed to write for varying purposes with different styles and tones. Having been an upper elementary teacher, I know full well how scary putting words on paper can be for individuals. Because once it is written, it will be read, and that is when errors will be discovered. The horror!

The thing about writing is that there are so many opportunities to do it throughout each day that it is impossible not to do it. From emails to newsletters, business plans to blog posts, the necessity to put words into written form are present. Even if you are not a "great" writer, you also have the tools needed to help you along the way, like the automated spelling and grammar checkers. Then you add in the AI option, and you have some supports to make you feel at least a little better about your writing.

What is missing then? What is missing, in my opinion, is the style of writing that matches your personality, purpose, or voice. Producing coherent and cohesive pieces of text that reflect you is something that people do, and they do it because they know you. Although a computer can generate text based on what has been written before, it may not be able to really capture your essence. Furthermore, if what is being used to compose new text is not very good, then they are reproducing more - not so good content. That being said, I believe that businesses need to use caution when choosing their developers of written material.

As you can guess, I love to write, and I have been doing so for a long time. It is fun for me to write for varying purposes and topics. I enjoy choosing just the right word for the job and making sure readers can hear my voice. I like the challenge of taking someone else's written documents and reworking them to suit a new audience or purpose. Additionally, I am developing the content to match the voice and style of the client. So, the next time you are struggling to update your monthly newsletter or revise the content on your website, consider a real person as THE best option.
