Writing the Methods Chapter
Shady Attia
Professor in Sustainable Architecture and Building Technology at Université de Liège
The method chapter of a dissertation, article, or proposal describes the exact steps that will be undertaken to address your hypotheses or research questions. This video describes the content that needs to be addressed in any methodology chapter in an MSc thesis or Ph.D. dissertation or scientific paper. The goal of this video is to provide a clear and complete description of the content of the methods chapter. It is necessary to describe this content in sufficient detail to help a reader to replicate your study.

Why there is little attention to describe the research methods chapter or section in most manuscripts?
There is little attention for researchers to describe their research methods including data collection, research protocols, or analysis methods. This makes reproducing analyses impossible. Although most universities and journals have policies in place for researchers to well describe the research methods, these rules are rarely enforced and are overseen by many reviewers.
Today, it is rare to read a well-written methods chapter in a paper or MSc thesis. It is even worse with paper-based Ph.D. dissertations. In fact, very few researchers willingly invest to write a complete methods chapter or section that can allow to understand the study assumptions, justifications and visualize the methodological process through study conceptual frameworks.
Therefore, I created this video to help scientists with writing the methods section and included a does and don'ts checklist:
