Writing for the Heart and Mind
Maya Angelou was an American poet, actress and civil rights leader who published several books of poems and autobiographies. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom among many other awards, including fifty honorary degrees. Her quote "The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart," captures why she resonates with so many people. Communicating is an art that both captures the heart and mind, her writing often did both. When we communicate to others in large and small organizations or to a single person, we should consider how best to go straight to the heart and in a way that slides through the brain.

6 年I tell our scientists and engineers, communications is at least 50% of their jobs. First they have to sell someone on an idea that is worth funding, internally or externally. While doing the work, they have to regularly inform their patron on the status of the work. Once completed, they have to communicate their level of success and publish the results in an archival report or peer reviewed publication. Unfortunately the emphasis on STEM has marginalized the arts, to include communications. Many of our younger scientists have difficulty speaking and writing, especially to a non-technical audience. Communications is a skill everyone in government or business needs to master.
