Now what?

How do you position yourself as an even better candidate to capture that desired role? I’m glad you asked! You have one more item to add and check off your list…follow up with a thank-you email after your interview.

This very simple but very important task shows your appreciation for the opportunity given to get interviewed and for the time the interviewers took to talk to you. But as simple as this is to do, most people don’t do it. Don’t fall in the latter category. This thank-you email can make the difference between the end of your job search (a.k.a. getting hired) and the continuation of it (a.k.a. rejection).

Make an even better impression on your future employer (yes, put that out there in the world that they will be your future employer and not just another potential one). Create a positive impression on the interviewer that they can’t ignore. So, how do you do that? Take a look at these tips to help you create the perfect thank-you note!

When should you write the thank-you email after the interview?

The sooner, the better. I would recommend that you do so immediately or at least within 60 minutes of the first interview. The sooner they know how extra awesome and thoughtful you are, the better the likelihood is that you can influence the interviewer’s candidate choice in your favor.

What should I write in the thank-you email?

You’ll want to include a few basic components in your email. Here are some elements to make it more successful:

?? Consider your reader. Whom are you writing to? Based on your answer, write the greeting.

  • If your interviewer seemed formal, then use a more professional greeting such as “Dear Mr./Ms. ____,” or “Good morning/afternoon/evening Mr./Ms. ____,” (write the interviewer’s last name in the blank space).
  • If your interviewer seemed more informal, you can use “Hello/Hi/Good morning, _____,” (write the interviewer’s name in the blank space).?

?? Express your appreciation for their time.

?? Let them know you are interested in the position and the perfect match for the job.

?? Tell them how you’ll bring value to their company, and how you’ll excel in the job.

?? If there were any details from the interview or the interviewer that created a special connection, add this to the email. For example, if you enjoyed something specific that the interviewer mentioned, consider alluding to it.

?? Let them know you are available to answer additional questions.

?? Express your enthusiasm to learn what the next steps in the process are.

Review your message before you send it

? Ensure the subject line of your thank-you note summarizes the email message clearly. Remember to KISS (Keep It Simple Smarty). ?? Use something like ‘Thank you for considering me for the _____ position’ or ‘Thanks for meeting me. I enjoyed our interview!’

? Check your email for grammatical errors, punctuation, typos, etc. Consider using online resources such as Grammarly or Quillbot.

? Send and personalize a thank-you email to each interviewer involved in the interview process, if there were more than one.

? Be genuine when writing the email. You’re not a robot or a template. Be original and write from the heart.

The thank-you email can be short, sweet, and to the point. Emphasize any aspects of the interview that you think will make you stand out to your future employer. Now, get to writing that perfect thank-you note!

While writing a thank-you letter within 60 minutes of the interview, and everything mentioned here is valuable, I'd suggest two additions to Loribeth's post: #1: Use the thank-you letter to add details for anything you realized later could use them. You can also attach examples of materials specific to what was discussed in the interview if you have them. Your samples provide proof that you can deliver what they need. #2: If you had help arranging the interviewer, such as through a recruiter, CC them and their manager, or even better, thank them directly. Taking this step shows the recruiter that you value their efforts in setting up your interview. If you need their help later, a positive interaction can help.
