Writing great copy for your website
“If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.” – Elmore Leonard. This is more than appropriate when writing your website copy.
The copy on your website is hugely important to your business success. When writing your website copy, you should keep in mind that you want your audience to learn, accomplish something or benefit from your business. If you do this, and your customers take some action, then you are writing successful copy.
In recent years, websites have changed dramatically, and with the vast number of websites out there – you need yours to stand out from the crowd.
So how do you write enticing and compelling copy?
Tell your customers how your services will benefit them
Often, business owners make the mistake of telling their customers all about them and their services. Now, this is not a bad thing to do, after all, your customers want to know who they are doing business with. But, your primary focus should be, “how will my products or services benefit you – the customer”.
By all means, display your awards and have a section about you and your business. But give your audience the option to access this information should they wish to. Otherwise, your copy should be, how will working with you or buying your products benefit the customer. Ensuring your customers can easily understand how they will benefit.
Include blogs
You don’t have to tell your customers about every single little detail about your business on the main pages. Depending on your business and the number of services or products you offer, this could be far too much content in one go. Instead, include a blog page. In your blog, you can help your audience to learn more about you, your business as well as offering them solutions and added value.
Be conversational
When a customer enters a shop, you don’t approach them with marketing and sales pitches straight away. You converse with them, possibly find out what they are looking for and how you might be able to help them. So it’s just as important that on your website you don’t just start talking at them. Keep it light and conversational, let your customers feel like they are talking with you and not just being spoken at.
Be aware of your keywords – but don’t go over the top
Your keywords are important, you should be aware of what keywords are and how they will help you to rank better on Google and other search engines. However, making every other word in your copy a keyword does not make for easy reading. You can use apps within your website to find the right balance of keywords, such as YoastSEO.
Tell your story, let people know who is behind the business
Don’t be afraid to let people know who you are. People want to do business with people and as such, it’s important to let your customers know who you are. Use a part of your ‘about us’ section to tell your customers about the person or people behind the business. Including a little bit about your background, your story and what you enjoy doing in your spare time. This can really allow your customers to relate to you and create a relationship – even before you have met in person.
