Writing class was a hoot!

Writing class was a hoot!

I take part in a writing class and this week the topic was Autobiography.

We were given a drawing of a tree and encouraged to fill the branches with ideas for stories from our past.

In the beginning I struggled. I couldn’t think of anything interesting to add to my memory tree.

But then, people started sharing stories from their past.

We were in stitches as we remembered funny moments from our youth.

As other people shared their stories, memories started to pop into my head of crazy school trips and teenage angst.

All of a sudden I was filling my tree with memories I could write about.

(Heads up – you may find a few popping into this newsletter over the coming months).

I wished I had kept a journal (or diary as we used to call it!).

Lots of lost memories that would be lovely to read and reflect on.

I realise that I’m a lot better at recording my work history than my personal one.

As a coach, I always encouraging my clients to keep a work journal.

The most obvious reason is to have a record of all your achievements to help you when it comes to your annual performance review.

It also helps you to recognise your achievements – and take a moment to feel proud of what you’ve done.

But it’s not only your achievements you should journal about.

I also encourage you to record the thoughts and feelings you experience in different situations.

By doing this you can learn so much about why you think or feel the way you do – which is so empowering.

If you felt great in a particular situation – what did you do to create that feeling and how can you do more of it?

If you felt uncomfortable – ask yourself why and what needs to change?

If the negative chatter starts – write down what bothered you and then what you can learn from the situation and what you could do differently to achieve a better outcome?

Writing out your thoughts and feelings is one of the most empowering practices you can gift yourself.

If you don’t do it already – I recommend you start your journal today.

PS - Understanding the power of the written word is one of the reasons I offer a written coaching option (The Online Experience). I help coach and guide you through the process with probing questions and analysis of your responses.
