Writers: What happens when the people that can produce your script… you can’t even get them to review it? Now what?

It's no longer as difficult as you may think.

I’m an intern with BSI Films. I sat in with BSI execs speaking with various streaming and film execs about what they want from writers submitting scripts.

To begin with, no longer are agents the only person that can submit scripts. If you or a team executive

forget about the old saying “you have to know someone” to submit a script. In fact, the business execs of film, streaming, cable, and broadcast companies want original content and do not care who you know.

  • They only care about how your project is written and the information you submit highlights how it meets their creative and business needs.

For the record: the mere fact so many movies are written by people you never heard of is proof it’s time to change your game plan if your current one ain’t working.

* Important: This is where you got to raise your mad writing skills and awareness of the needs of the company you're submitting to, up to the next level... not to worry it ain't difficult.

To start,?no one gets to knock on the door unless they find someone with experience and ability to submit a script. It used to be finding someone to help you was like being in a scene from Mission Impossible.

  • No longer is that the case. It can be done and is done every day! There are qualified execs everywhere, you just have to decide if and/or who you want help from.
  • The one-person industry execs listen to is their?Development Executive (DE.) No matter what Streaming, film, cable, and broadcast companies you submit to, the DE is the first person you have to make happy.
  • Development Executive (DE) is like the bouncer at the front door, your Development Presentation (DP) will get you entry and is what they will read first, before reading your script.

********************************************************

Let's talk about what they want.

The process industry execs have made subtle changes to help accept and review a greater number of scripts, has a more objective method to the madness in place for what they want your script and presentation to reveal.

  • Don’t get me wrong, you still need a script polish and presentation, but it’s what information they want in the presentation and how the first 10 pages of your script is written is written to grab and hold the attention of the audience it's targeted for.

New rule, your script is NOT the first document a DE will read. Your Development Presentation (DP) is the first document they will review.

  • If your Presentation is compelling enough to capture their attention the next step is to review the first 10 pages of your script (sometimes the first 1-2 pages, has to grab and hold their attention.)
  • If page one or two, does not reveal what they want identified, chances are they will not spend an hour reading it, least of all sending it to committee.

*************************************************************

Below is some of the terms and questions business executives will ask a DE, when a script is presented to committee.

Answers to the questions below can be found by clicking here. What's Needed-Submit Scripts To Film, Streaming & Broadcast Co. |BSI Films | Los Angeles

Script: Why will the first 10 pages of your script determine if your script is sent for a full review or Passed on?

The first 10 pages of your script must reveal key entertainment and writing standards a DE will want identified.

  • What is a quadrant??
  • What is HC??
  • What is CQ?

Ok, thanks for the tip. Although, never judge a book by its cover, or a script by the first 10 pages.

This whole "article" is just a set-up for another seller, someone wanting Screenwriters to cough up thousands of dollars for their fancy decks. I'm seeking buyers, not sellers.
