Writers: You took all that time writing a script, but the people that can produce it, you can’t even send it to them! How can I make that happen?

It's no longer as difficult as you may think.

I sat in with our execs speaking with streaming and film execs of various companies. I’m going to share with you some of the noise I heard from behind the curtain regarding what industry execs say about writers and scripts that get by their Development Executive (DE.)

For the few, none of the following is a secret but for the many, here is how the system for submitting has made some subtle changes, but nothing you can’t handle.

To begin with, within the studios and streaming companies there are 2 people you will need to grab and hold the attention of. The first is the Development Executive the second is the business executives.

Note: forget about the old saying “you have to know someone” to submit a script. In fact, the business execs of film, streaming, cable, and broadcast companies are desperate for original content and do not care who you know.

  • They only care about how your project is written and that the information you submit highlights how it meets their creative and business needs.

For the record: the mere fact so many movies are written by people you never heard of is proof it’s time to change your game plan if your current one ain’t working.

To start, no one gets to knock on the door unless they find someone with experience and ability to submit a script. You need a person or company with permission to submit your script.

There are qualified execs everywhere, you must decide if and/or who you want help from. If assistance is needed, click here.

  • Who to contact at any major company: No matter what Streaming, film, cable, and broadcast companies you submit to, the Development Executive (DE) is the first person you must make happy.
  • Development Executive (DE) is like the bouncer at the front door, your Development Presentation (DP) and polished script will get you entry, if it meets their current requirements.

Let's talk about what they want.

The process industry execs have made for submitting a script are subtle. They’re designed to help accept and review a greater number of scripts,

It is a more objective method to the madness for them to review a script. The standards and guidelines for what they want your script and presentation to reveal, apply to Everyone.

  • Don’t get me wrong, you still need a script polish and presentation, but it’s what information they want in the presentation package and how the first 10 pages of your polished script is written to meet their creative and production needs.

New rule, your script is NOT the first document a DE will read. Your Development Presentation (DP) is the first document they will review.

  • If your Presentation is compelling enough to capture their attention the next step is to review the first 10 pages of your script (sometimes the first 1-2 pages, has to grab and hold their attention.)
  • If page one or two, does not reveal what they want identified, chances are they will not spend an hour reading it, least of all sending it to committee.

Below is some of the terms and questions industry executives will ask a DE, when a script was presented to committee.

?Script: Why will the first 10 pages of your script determine if your script is sent for a full review or Passed on?

The first 10 pages of your script must reveal key entertainment and writing standards a DE will want identified.

  • What is HC?
  • What is CQ?
