How can writers that don’t have an agent submit a script to film & streaming companies?

Although there are still rules and guidelines to follow for submitting a script. Today's process is less restrictive and gives Independents a pathway to submit their scripts.

The following are some of the steps to consider if wanting to submit your script to studios and streaming companies.

  • To begin with, industry execs have lessened the requirements for who can submit scripts. See below...
  • What is a Development Presentations (DP) why is it needed, and how does it differ from a pitch deck?
  • Do you need to know someone in the industry or have talent attached to your project? See Below ...
  • Is it mandatory to have a visual or proof of public interest in your project? i.e. concept video, book version of script, channel on YouTube, social media followers, etc.
  • What happens to my script once it's submitted to a film, streaming, or broadcast company?

For details see below for details.

Writers are allowed to submit their scripts with or without assistance from Agents.

Step1. Film, Streaming, Cable, and Broadcast companies will accept projects from writers and producers without an agent.

  • Submitting a script on your own. If you or your lead executive has credits from a major studio, streaming, or broadcast company as a producer or writer along with knowledge of what industry executives require for developing scripts for review. You can apply for permission to submit scripts.
  • ?If assistance is needed the following option is also available. In today's industry agents are no longer the only person that can submit scripts.
  • There are qualified executive producers that can assist you. You just need to decide who, you want to assist you. Do your research. Using IMDB.com is a good source to confirm an executive's credits. Make sure their credits are from major film, cable, streaming, and/or broadcast companies.
  • Speak to our executive producer if assistance is needed.

Step 2. When asked to send over information about your project, companies want to see more than your script.

Your Presentation along with a Polished Script are mandatory.

  • What is a Development Presentation (DP).
  • A DP immediately identifies specifics about your scripts ability to meet their creative, production, and programming needs.
  • It can also provide Executives enough information, to determine if your script continues to be reviewed or rejected.

Development Presentation is a term used by insiders, to distinguish it from a pitch deck. The term Pitch Deck is still used by writers... and that's ok.

Note: It does not matter what name you call the package you send them. However, it is important the information you provide meets the current needs of the company it's submitted to.

What should be included in your Presentation?

What is the difference between a pitch deck and a Development Presentation.

  • Typically, a pitch deck is focused on the creative information about a script. Along with mentioning potential cast members, a comparison to similar movies, and other creative factors.
  • A Development Presentation will also focus on the creative, but more so on that company's current production and programming need.
  • This document also provides information about your project that will help executives determine if your review will continue or is Passed on.

3. Polished Script: If your Development Package reveals information they're looking for, the next step taken is to review the first 10 pages of your polished script.
