August is more than just the end of summer; it is also National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)! In honor of NIAM LifeWork Strategies would like to take a few moments to discuss vaccines and how a boost to one’s immune system can boost the company’s bottom line.
How do vaccines work?
Vaccines contain antigens and these antigens teach the body’s immune system how to make antibodies. The Antibodies identify and fight that particular disease. By protecting the body through vaccinations, you are not exposing yourself to the more serious, and sometimes long term, effects of infections. Plus, while it is much less likely, should you become infected after receiving the vaccine, the illness is far less likely to be dire or serious than it would have been had you not been vaccinated.?This is due to your body already knowing how to fight the illness and being able to resist the disease.
How do vaccines impact a company?
Not being immune to certain illnesses can cause presenteeism and absenteeism impacting the company’s productivity and costs. Those who are ill but still come to work (presenteeism) can cost the company big time. In 2020 a study done in the U.K. showed a cost of £46 billion which was equivalent to over $59 billion in the US.?Per a study conducted at the University of Arizona, when a sick employee reports to work, in as little as 4 hours they can spread their disease to 50% of the surfaces and other employees.?Coming in sick and spreading the illness creates absenteeism (which can be caused by illness and doctor visits) which also has a steep cost to employers, as much as $84 billion per year according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.

What are the options when it comes to workplace immunizations?
Host a workplace immunization clinic! The benefits of a vaccinated workforce can be seen by both employers and employees. Employers can see an increase in productivity leading to an increased profit and a decrease in costs from employees missing work and, equally as important, employees are healthier versions of themselves and able to save their PTO due to less absences from being ill. Aside from providing informational resources to employees, and their families, a great way to encourage vaccinations is to host onsite vaccination clinics for staff. For example, making annual flu vaccinations part of your workplace wellness program has the potential to offer several benefits!
