Write Your Story, Shape Your Legacy: The Power of Authoring Your Own Book

Write Your Story, Shape Your Legacy: The Power of Authoring Your Own Book

Imagine leaving behind a powerful legacy that inspires, educates, and transforms lives for years or generations.

I've been thinking a lot about legacy and its connection to authoring books. Then, as if on cue, my childhood friend Sheila called to catch up.

Not a conversation goes by where Sheila doesn't mention that she remembers me playing the flutophone when we were at Howell Road Elementary School.

While that's a charming memory, I still want to leave more of a legacy than that.? That’s where my books come in.?

As Maya Angelou said: "If you're going to live, leave behind a legacy. Make an impact on the world that can never be erased"

You’re already making an impact. As an entrepreneur, coach, or consultant, you help your clients solve problems and achieve results.?

Authoring your book can be an ideal way to leave your legacy. Here are the four main reasons why:

  1. Greater Impact: You’ve built a body of work that you are proud of. You are making a difference in the lives of those you interact with. You may have created unique methodologies, systems, or frameworks. These have significant value and can impact even more people - they just need to know about them.?
  2. Reflection and Shaping the Narrative: Writing a book requires you to take a step back and view your life and work with a new set of eyes, through a different lens. It gives you a chance to reflect on your accomplishments and then shape them into a compelling narrative. Your life and work are shared through your own lens.
  3. Enhanced positioning: A book is among the best vehicles for increasing credibility, authority, and expert status. Your enhanced positioning as a published author further enhances your legacy.
  4. Expand your reach during and beyond your lifetime: ?As my client, Wei Houng, stated: “One of the reasons why I wanted to write a book was to put into writing some of the ways that I was able to create success in my life and navigate some of the deepest, most profound challenges. I understood to a degree that because of my work, not everybody consumes information through a workshop or a video, and people consume it through reading. I realized this potentially could be a big part of my footprint on the planet and my legacy.”

“Even though your time here is temporary, if you do a good enough job, your work will last forever.” - Anonymous

For me, I want my legacy to be ‘she was a flutophone player and her books inspired me, and she made a difference to a lot of people.’

Why is legacy important to you?

i love the idea of holding onto meaningful memories. i’ve been encouraging my mum to share some of hers and every time she does i appreciate it so much. that said, i have a feeling she might prefer to meet over Zoom and talk them through. however they emerge, i’ll be grateful to have them.

It's so true that writing one's own book can help us to understand ourselves, our business, and our world more deeply, Jane Tabachnick, and to influence all three for the better. It's truly powerful, indeed.

And I'd add that writing our story teaches us that we have the power to continue to write and rewrite our lives and our stories. Great message Jane Tabachnick. Do you think people hold back because they don't think their story is "enough"?
