Write Your Book Tip 5: Set the Stage for Ease of Writing

You've got the time and you've got the place. What else can help? Several things, the first of which is knowing what you're going to write.

My second writing alarm is set for 5 minutes before the end of my writing session. This alarm allows me to capitalize on my flow by making notes for the following day's session. Sometimes I even write half a sentence, so I can pick up where I left off the next day.

You'll also want to practice the cooking strategy of mise en place by putting your writing situation together before you start writing.

  • Make sure your laptop is charged and on your desk.
  • Have writing notes you'll need to reference? Put those on your desk, too.
  • Is your writing fueled by coffee? Set up the coffee maker the night before and put your mug out on the counter so you can pour and go!

The idea is to avoid spending precious writing minutes by doing all preparation ahead of time. What else do you need to have ready before you write?
