Write a Review - How hard could it be?

Write a Review - How hard could it be?

What I learned about writing a review in Apple Podcasts

My mission to become a guest on as many podcasts as possible includes my commitment to listening to shows that are potential matches for my audience before I pitch myself to those hosts.

Pitching is a process

I am studying with Nancy Juetten in her Broadcast Your Brilliance Bootcamp. She teaches and models best practices to increase opportunities to be a guest and when selected, how to be a great guest.

Factors that can help you rise to the top of the list

  • To get more yeses you've got to make more asks. It's a numbers game.
  • Listen to shows and determine if you are a stylistic match with the host.
  • Not all shows are a fit, even if the show description sounds good.
  • Subscribe to paid podcast matching services, like podmatch.com and matchmaker.fm assist in sourcing shows.
  • Take notes as you listen to shows for the golden nuggets in each episode and share what you found most valuable with the host.
  • Acknowledge the expertise of the host and their platform.
  • Be judicious with your time and if you can, delegate.
  • Rate and review the show you want to be on. (More on this point later).
  • Take a screenshot of your review - share it with the host.
  • Customize each pitch.
  • Be honest and clear about how you can be of value to their audience.
  • Have an up-to-date media one sheet and media kit at the ready.
  • Thank your host for inviting you.

Leaving a Review on Apple Podcasts - How Hard Could it be?

I switched listening from Apple podcasts to Spotify and Apple Podcasts had not been open on any of my devices for years.

A meeting with a podcast host confirmed all of the steps of pitching and guesting count. In fact, when I mentioned Nancy his comment was "She is an A+" from pitch to guesting. He even called out her including her 5-star review in her pitch.

Posting a 5-star review was on my list, but I had not taken this step. I figured it would be super simple. But it was more complex than I anticipated.

I have been an Apple person since my first MacSE in 1987. Over the years, some of the ease of use has been eroded, and such is the case when it comes to posting and reading reviews in their podcast app.

I had to search out how to post a review in the app. Searching the show was clunky too. Leaving a review was not obvious.

Viewing Posted Reviews

Posting a review on my computer was one thing, but it brought up a different problem, how could I view my posted reviews?

Here is an article that helped me out from Business Insider. And, seeing all of my posted reviews can only be viewed by going into settings on one of my iOS devices. Knowledge is power. And this expedition into posting reviews confirms why I migrated to Spotify.

Be My Guest

The trajectory to being a guest on the best podcasts starts with being a guest on podcasts. Like an actor going for their Actor's Equity Card, you have to work to get work. I am building up my book of guest spots.

Being clear about the audience you want to reach simplifies the process of researching shows and hosts.

It takes time and being willing to listen to shows before you apply to be a guest. And, not all shows accept guests. Eliminate the shows that are closed to guests or don't fit with your message and expertise.

Give first. Hosting a show is an investment. Let the host know you respect and honor their commitment. You want to be of service.

5-Stars

I was cranky about having to poke around in the guts of my phone in order to post a 5-star review. Taking this step for potential shows and giving back to those shows where I have been a guest is a golden habit.

And, it will get easier with practice.

Podcasts are Perfect for Authors

Show up and share your stories in conversation and you will get more readers. Your recorded conversation is available to people around the world. You can share your content multiple times without doing any hard-core selling. Podcasts are a platform where you can reveal why you are the expert and a human being.
