Write a Bestselling Book that Will Sell for a Decade, Part 2

Before I dive into Part 2, I thought you might want to listen in on a conversation I had with Matt Feret, author of the Prepare for Medicare?series on The Matt Feret Show. We talk about strategic book coaching, how to write a book, self-publishing vs. traditional, monetizing your book, and so much more. Once you've got your title and subtitle nailed down (keeping in mind you can always wordsmith it right up until you publish), it's time to design your cover! Engage your graphic designer to put together a cover that will help you to both fit in and stand out amongst your book peers. I love to write to a cover, so even if you're only a few weeks into the process, the sooner you get started, the sooner you'll have a design you love!

Your book can fit in?by ensuring:

  • the design is representative of your genre (colors, font, etc.)
  • it's clean and clear (avoid muddy images or a cover that's "too busy")
  • uses at least 3 colors, avoiding the use of red + white or red + black only (connotes a stop sign) or yellow + black only (connotes danger or even poison). On a subconscious level, people will avoid your book.

Your book can stand out by:

  • Using your publishing company logo on the spine
  • Put the genre / sub-genre and price on the back cover
  • Have a book cover with visual interest (custom design with shading and layering as opposed to a stock image or design)

Be sure your cover is clear enough and the title is easily readable at the "Amazon app store size" on your phone (even for folks with older eyes...).

Your cover is the second fastest way to convert buyers (the first is to have excellent copywriting for your book description). Tomorrow, let's make sure your content is primed to make your book a "best earning" book!
