Welcome to the 5th edition of our Apple Watch Insider’s report. This issue again contains a number of insights that will interest many of you, whether you are a Watch App developer or simply an early adopter.
A word on methodology first. For this report, we polled almost 150 of you over the May 26th to May 29th timeframe and 105 completed the survey! So first a big thank you to all of the new participants who make this research project possible. As the group continues to build, the more interesting and statistically significant the insights become. So remember we do welcome new participants continuously – simply head to www.wristly.co and sign up! Also, we encourage you to refer your Watch-wearing colleagues and friends to join the project as well. In return, all “Inner Circle” members get to hear about the insights before anybody else!
iPhone Net Promoter Score (“NPS”) Shines at 72!
As some of you remember from last week, the big surprise insight was the low 14 NPS we gave the Apple Watch. This week we wanted to benchmark the level of reliability of the panel and therefore polled you on your sentiment regarding the iPhone. This time there was really no surprise. With a very high 72 NPS, the iPhone is clearly a beloved product for most of us with notably 80% of you rating it a 9 or a 10!
Bands Are The New Black!
If anyone was unsure about the interest of early Apple Watch owners wanting multiple bands let us put that thought to rest immediately.
Less than one month into owning your Watch, a whopping 20% have purchased at least a 2nd band (and yes, a few already have 3 or more!). When we asked about your intent to acquire another band, more than 60% of you stated that you were either likely (38%) or very likely (25%) to purchase more! If these numbers get confirmed over time, Bands might become a very large accessory market opportunity for Apple and an array of third parties!
But what surprised us even more was that almost 9 out of 10 of you own the “Sport” band - and the next favorite is the Milanese Loop at about 14%, all others registering relatively small numbers!
Complications Are Beachfront Properties
Noted analyst Horace Deidu was the first to call out the "Complications" on the Watch face as the most valuable layer of the Apple Watch user interface due to their instant accessibility. Wristly panel users agree wholeheartedly. Today more than 90% of our users have customized their Watch faces to accommodate an average of 3.8 complications each! Unsurprisingly, Date and Weather are the two most frequently selected with Activity and Calendar close behind.
Looking to the future, our panel also suggested a number of innovative ideas for new types of Complications. From unread email counters to a dynamic status update based on context "e.g. flight information when travelling". Our prediction: when Apple opens up the APIs for custom Complications, a fierce App battle will follow!
Finally the full report includes some unique perspectives on the usability of some of the key Apple Watch components including Notifications, Glances and the Digital Crown. Copy of the full report is available at https://wristly.co/insights/WristlyInsightsReport5.pdf
