The Mindful Minute
By Pema Sherpa & Brendan Barca
Age-old Buddhist wisdom for modern living. Each week you'll get 1 quote, 1 reflection and 1 action to help you lead a calmer, clearer, and more conscious life.

Quote:
"To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself."
- Thich Nhat Hanh
Reflection:
Ever notice how we always fix ourselves up before heading out? We swap out that wrinkled t-shirt, smooth down our hair, do one last mirror check. We'd be mortified to have anyone see us look "unpresentable," right?

Sure, there's nothing wrong with wanting to take care of our looks or beautify ourselves. But it's this constant need to present ourselves in a way that others find acceptable that makes us overlook the truth—that we are fundamentally beautiful exactly as we are.
What if, instead of dwelling on whether others might accept us, we worked on accepting ourselves? Wrinkled t-shirt, bedhead, and all. If we're able to make this shift, we might start seeing the beauty in our quirks rather than chasing some "perfect" image of ourselves. How freeing would that feel?
The best part? Once we fully accept of ourselves, it doesn't matter if we leave the house looking polished or in yesterday's t-shirt. We can feel good about ourselves no matter what.
Action:
Next time you're getting ready to go out, pause before that final mirror check. Instead of focusing on what you'd like to change, find one thing about your natural self that you appreciate. Maybe it's the spark in your eyes, the curve of your smile, or simply the fact that you're alive and breathing. Carry that appreciation with you throughout the day. Notice how it feels to move through the world with a bit more self-acceptance.
Remember, your unfiltered self is beautiful and worthy of being seen and celebrated.
