Wrapping Up 2023 as a Perfectly Imperfect Climate Activist + 16 City Meetups in January!
Quick Overview of this Newsletter (written at the end of 2023):
1. The Anti “Year in Review”
As 2023 comes to a close, many folks like to do their year in review or make predictions or plan for the future…
But I don’t want to do any of that - there’s plenty of fluff and showing off and Xmas cheer as it is.
Because to be honest, I’m exhausted, ready to recuperate and feel like such a climate fraud. And things aren’t always rosy, especially in startups.
It’s hard and painful and sometimes downright brutal.
So rather than sharing the Instagram highlight reel, here’s a bit of honest humanity to take into your holiday season.
Because I’m a Perfectly Imperfect Climate Activist
And I certainly feel like such a climate fraud.
How can I reconcile my “failings” while also running the largest local-to-global climate community in the world?
Am I a hypocrite? Am I a fraud?
Shouldn’t I be doing more…?
The truth is: we’re ALL “only human.”
Perfection is impossible and demanding it from ourselves (or others) is a road to failure that stops us from ever starting.
And we NEED more IMPERFECT climate activists - more founders, funders and action takers committed to climate impact - even if they’re not perfect.
So STOP judging yourself & others so harshly.
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about putting in the effort, doing your part (as much as you can) and not criticizing or attacking others for doing “less.”
Because alienating our world of imperfect humans only decreases the size of Team Planet. And this dream, ie. crushing climate change, requires a team.
So rather than dismaying about Big Oil buying COP28, hating yourself for that occasional hamburger or throwing in the towel on your corporate’s sustainability efforts cause it’s too hard or building your climate apocalypse bunker because it’s an “unsolvable problem,” why not stay positive, do your best and believe that together we can combat climate change - even as imperfect, greedy and self-centered humans…

10 个月There's always MORE that one can do, but it's a fine balance (also mentally) for being OK with "enough". My sentiment is that if you're aiming to be net POSITIVE and aren't hurting the environment maliciously, that for me is enough. As you say, Matt Ward, there's no use to beating ourselves up for not being perfect... but if everyone can move in the right direction, that's a hell of a movement to create positive change!

10 个月I think it all comes down to the quantity/excess of your listed points. I used to be a vegetarian in the 90ties, but stopped because I noticed eating meat made me healthier. This doesn't mean, I consume meat every day or in massive amounts. When eating meat, it also depends on how it was produced, where it comes from and if it was fed with food that we humans would eat as well (hence, I prefer lamb/beef/goat/pork to chicken, for example).
