Wound Care Medical Billing

Wound Care Medical Billing

Wound care is a critical aspect of medical treatment, and proper wound care billing is essential to ensure that healthcare providers are reimbursed for their services. There are several important codes that healthcare providers need to be aware of when billing for wound care services.

Firstly, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes are used to document the diagnosis of the wound. ICD codes are essential in medical billing as they help identify the reason for the wound and allow for accurate coding of the wound care services provided.

Secondly, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes are used to describe the wound care services provided. These codes indicate the specific procedures and treatments performed by healthcare providers in the wound care process. Some of the most common CPT codes used in wound care billing include:

  • 97602 – Wound care, non-selective debridement

This code is used for the removal of nonviable tissue from a wound to promote healing. Non-selective debridement refers to the removal of both viable and nonviable tissue.

  • 97597 – Debridement (open wound), select one area

This code is used for selective debridement, where only a specific area of the wound is debrided.

  • 11042 – Debridement, subcutaneous tissue (includes epidermis and dermis, if performed); first 20 sq cm or less

This code is used when subcutaneous tissue is debrided from the wound. It is typically used for larger wounds that require more extensive debridement.

  • 97598 – Removal of devitalized tissue from wound(s), selective debridement, without anesthesia (e.g., high-pressure waterjet with/without suction, sharp selective debridement with scissors, scalpel and forceps), including topical application(s), wound assessment, and instruction(s) for ongoing care, per session, total wound(s) surface area; each additional 20 sq cm, or part thereof

This code is used for the selective debridement of devitalized tissue from the wound without anesthesia. It includes wound assessment, topical application, and ongoing care instructions.

  • 97584 – Negative pressure wound therapy (e.g., vacuum-assisted drainage collection), using a mechanically-powered device, not durable medical equipment, including provision of topical application(s), wound assessment, and instructions for ongoing care, per session

This code is used for negative pressure wound therapy, which uses a vacuum-assisted drainage collection device to promote wound healing. It includes wound assessment, topical application, and ongoing care instructions.

In addition to the ICD and CPT codes, healthcare providers also need to be aware of the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes. These codes are used for supplies and equipment used in wound care, such as dressings, bandages, and topical agents.

In conclusion, proper wound care billing is crucial to ensure healthcare providers are reimbursed for their services. Healthcare providers must be familiar with the ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes used in wound care billing to ensure accurate coding and reimbursement for their services. By understanding the codes, healthcare providers can streamline their billing processes and ensure that they receive the appropriate reimbursement for their wound care services.
