Would you wear a salmon?

or how by-products and dissolvable fabrics can save the world...

This newsletter is called "Why Not": cuz as I wander through life, everyday, I see a creative solution being adopted by some forward-thinking community and think: "Wow, the fixes are all already here, 'why not' use them?"

Would you wear a salmon?

In a world thirsting for sustainability, the fashion industry stands at the edge of a revolution. Among the vanguard of this movement are smart fabrics, materials that defy traditional expectations and offer a glimpse into a future where fashion harmonizes with the planet. Two such innovations are, fish skin leather and dissolvable fabrics, blending the boundaries between nature, technology, and artistry.

Fish skin tells a story of transformation, from the depths of the ocean to the catwalks.

Imagine the journey of a salmon, not just ending on dinner plates but extending to the world of haute couture. Fish skin leather, a byproduct of the fishing industry, transforms what would be waste into luxurious, durable materials. This process not only exemplifies sustainable resource use but also infuses fashion with unique textures and patterns, previously unimagined. Brands like Marimekko, renowned for their bold prints and colors, have dabbled in fish skin leather, presenting collections that not only speak to the aesthetic but also to the ethical sensibilities of the modern consumer. Fish skin tells a story of transformation, from the depths of the ocean to the catwalks, symbolizing a cycle of renewal and respect for nature.

Parallel to this narrative of reimagined waste is the tale of dissolvable fabrics, a marvel of modern science designed to vanish without a trace. Sounds like future??? Well, designer Hussein Chalayan’s Paris Fashion Week show from 2015 already had them on the runway! These materials, engineered to dissolve in water or specific conditions, propose an elegant solution to the perennial problem of textile waste. In the medical field, they pave the way for garments and linens that reduce the risk of contamination and simplify logistics. In fashion, they promise a future where clothes can be "unmade," their fibers reclaimed and reborn into new textiles, embodying the true essence of circular fashion. Imagine a dress that, at the end of its lifecycle, dissolves and is reborn, challenging the very notion of waste.

Dissolvable fabrics embody the true essence of circular fashion!

These innovations, however, are not mere products of imagination but realities taking shape in today's world. Companies like Dissolve Tech offer a glimpse into this future with their water-soluble bags, hinting at broader applications in fashion. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also captivates the imagination, offering a narrative of endless possibilities where fashion and function coalesce.

I see the journey of smart fabrics from concept to closet not just as a story of technological achievement but also as testament to a changing ethos in fashion and society.
