Would you rather be rich or happy?
Have you ever felt that you are trying to maintain an image on the outside but on the inside you’re in pain? Well by the time my son was born in 2011, on the outside business was booming. On the inside, things were very different. You can think that running your own business gives you freedom & choice, but often you end up working so hard & resenting it. That was me. I’d leave the house at 6am before Bobby got up & for at least 6 days a week wouldn’t get home until late after Bobby was in bed. I’d made my first million, but something was very wrong.
I’m fortunate that I have a supportive fiancée. She is quiet, so when she talks, you listen! She sat me down & shared how proud she was of me & our properties & companies, but said these words that changed dropped the bottom out of my stomach: “Rob, if you keep working like this your son will turn 18, leave home & you won’t know who he is”. At first there was guilt. Then strong defensiveness. Once I’d gotten over myself, the reality kicked in. Then these great things happened, & 2 of them are for you.
Instead of being so extreme, I asked myself, “How can I be successful in my profession AND in my home/family life?” I never thought you could do both & always thought you had to sacrifice one for the other. But I loved my family & my business, & wanted to have it all. Could I make money & make a difference? Can you be happy & successful in business & at home?
Every business owner or start up knows about systems, outsourcing & leverage. Yet why are so many still working so hard & long? We all know we need to hire smart people but think we can’t afford it. We all know we need to let go but think others can’t do the job as well as us. We even feel important if we lead by example of hard hard work. But if I wanted to keep my fiancée & be a great father, something had to give.
Whilst there were growing pains, doing the following 9 things I’d been told but never had the courage (or always had an excuse) to do, changed everything. I:
1. detailed absolutely everything I did, day-to-day, A to Z
2. hired staff before I was ready (first two were our Mums)
3. finally went on a 3 week holiday we’d put off for years (& with no internet!)
4. forced myself to a. take time off, b. work ON not IN the business & c. train people rather than do their job for them
5. accepted there would be challenges & kept the faith
6. let others take the praise (which was hard/weird when it’s your business)
7. accepted mistakes; in fact encouraged them, & let people ‘fail’ safely
8. embraced technology (apps for audio, screenshot, remote access, etc)
9. trained myself to be a leader & builder of great teams & not a ‘worker’
By my 34th birthday I ‘retired’ from operations. The final piece in the puzzle was when I demolished my unnecessarily large office within our office. It freed space for 5 or 6 great new staff, & forced me to have mobile only access to the office, server & team. I naively thought I’d be missed in the office & secretly wanted them to still need & miss me. Oh no. The team were happier when I was in away in Cayman or Dubai or the US caddying for my son in his world golf championships. They LOVED it, & not because they ran riot in the office, but because they had freedom too. And the business grew much faster. It was a surreal experience to make exponentially more & more but work 1/5th of the time, when & where I wanted. I’ll admit to feeling guilty at first, after all I’d been raised by hard working parents that hard work was the only way. It wasn’t, it was the only way I knew at the time.
I became so much happier. I still love to be immersed in business, but at my pace, while spending a lot of my time with my family, great people & the freedom & time to come up with ideas & to give back. My fiancée runs her Amazon business from her phone when we travel between raising our kids. I pick & choose speaking gigs according to the country I'm in. I write my books all over the world. This 18-month journey turned into the “Life Leverage” philosophy detailed in my book “Life Leverage” which became a UK no.1 best seller, & the “Business & Lifestyle Blueprint” that formed a very special event, the “Business & lifestyle Summit”.
To help you live your ideal “Life Leverage” lifestyle, & as a way for me to show you that you can do it too, despite all your fears & doubts, I’d love to invite you to the “Business & Lifestyle Summit”. This is not a ‘free’ event & only for people serious about going from a busy (sometimes successful) fool like me, to someone with a mobile, balanced lifestyle making money, making a difference & experiencing more happiness & contribution. This system works in any vocation, any country & for any & everyone. I challenge you to learn & implement the “Life Leverage’ philosophy & change your life now.
