WOULD YOU RATHER: Hire someone with book knowledge or knowledge from experience?

One of my very first coaching clients was a former professor of psychology at a renowned New York University.?

She was a referral client from a therapist. My colleague said, “She needs you. She needs to be guided to her strength and resilience.”

As a new coach, I wondered if I had it in me.

Imposter syndrome crept in, but I kept hearing the words of my colleague. She believed in me.

So I sat with my new client, a beautiful woman who was struggling with her own demons.

Her own titles and labels did not matter. At this moment, she was a human being reaching out for help.

At one point in a session, after I asked a question that struck her to the core, she looked at me and said, “I’ve lived a lot, and as a retired professor, book knowledge is great, but nothing is better than someone who has been there. I would hire you over anyone, because you, Sara, have been there.”

Validation.

After being questioned, “who are you to be doing this work?” over and over again, this was validation that I was exactly where I needed to be.

That validation has happened over and over again.

From 1:1 coaching clients to those who have been on my Grand Canyon and Alaska Retreats, from people who have read my book, to the man who approached me in tears after my TEDx talk and thanked me profusely for sharing my wisdom. He was going to sit at the Thanksgiving table that year and talk forgiveness, in hopes his family would be brought together instead of torn apart.

I could never be doing this work by just reading how.

I had to walk the journey, learning as I went along, tripping over my own two feet, and getting back up again.

You will see me fail.

You will see me screw up and own my responsibilities.

That is all a part of my learning and teaching.

Leadership requires our ability to be empathic, vulnerable, and authentic.

^^^ THIS is what you embody from experience.

Book knowledge is important, no doubt.

But never underestimate the person who has believed in themselves, has garnered their resilience and knows what they are speaking about.

From not only their head but from their heart, too.

I will stand by my words on this one.

Forever and always, from experience.
