1. Scandal in the VCM must not Impede Tropical Forest Conservation

Contrary to recent media reports suggesting deforestation reduction efforts are a scam, quality REDD+ credits are essential for financing conservation in the transition to net zero. Improved standards and regulations are crucial for effective climate programs, as conserving tropical forests is vital for mitigating climate change and protecting biodiversity. Read more.

2. Emerging Carbon Markets in Cambodia Face Institutional and Land Rights Challenges

Cambodia is developing two carbon markets: an unregulated voluntary market and a nascent market under Article 6. In partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute, Cambodia has created an Operations Manual for Article 6, outlining an institutional framework, a carbon registry, and a tax system, expected to be legislated within a year. While this does not yet affect the voluntary market, future regulations may integrate voluntary projects into a national registry. Key challenges include limited institutional capacity and complex land rights issues, as evidenced by disputes in the Southern Cardamom REDD+ project.

3. EU Council Adopts General Approach on Green Claims Directive to Combat Greenwashing

The Council adopted its position on the green claims directive, aiming to tackle greenwashing and help consumers make informed, greener choices. The directive sets minimum requirements for substantiating, communicating, and verifying environmental claims, mandating clear, evidence-based claims verified by third-party experts, with simplified procedures for certain claims and support measures for microenterprises.?

4. Integrity Council Approves First High-Integrity Carbon Credits, Signaling Progress in Voluntary Carbon Markets

The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market has approved the first carbon-crediting methodologies meeting its high-integrity Core Carbon Principles (CCPs), enabling the labeling of about 27 million carbon credits. This milestone supports private sector financing for emissions reduction. The announcement aligns with recent U.S. Government principles on high-integrity carbon credits, highlighting the growing recognition of voluntary carbon markets in climate action.
