Would You Like To Get Well?

Would You Like To Get Well?

Have you ever been asked that question before (Would you like to get well)? Maybe you have; and then again, maybe you haven’t. But if you were asked that question, how would you answer? Would you have to think about it and verify if you are really in need of healing? Or, do you know exactly what/where you need to be healed in your life – maybe it’s a physical healing, or a mental/emotional healing, or even a spiritually healing.

The fact is, in some way or another we all need to be healed. The Bible says in Romans 3

Romans 3:23 (NLT) - For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

If you are a spiritual person you may have prayed a prayer to God at one time or another to heal you of some real issue in your life (depression, sadness, loneliness, hidden sin, addiction, etc.). Night after night you pray and yet day after day you do not get the healing you are looking for. And yet we hear Jesus asking us; “Do you want to get well?”

Here is the story of Jesus asking a sick man near Jerusalem the same question:

John 5:1-10 (NLT) - Afterward Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days. Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was the pool of Bethesda, with five covered porches. Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches. One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”

“I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.”

Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!”

Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath, so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, “You can’t work on the Sabbath! The law doesn’t allow you to carry that sleeping mat!”

So let me ask again, “Do you want to get well”?

How will you respond; like the man in the story with a lot of excuses (reread verse 7 - in green above)? Or are you willing to step out in faith and get the spiritual healing you need?

James 4:7-10 (NLT) - So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
James 5:14-16 (NLT) - Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven. 16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Faith is a big part of healing (spiritual, emotional & mental healing; and many times with our physical healing). What God wants us to do for our healing goes against our common sense – “Give me a pill.” Or “Give me a prescription.” “Give me a quick fix.” But the Biblical book of James gives us two simple things we must do to get the healing our spiritual/emotional heart needs – Humility and Confession. That’s IT! And It doesn’t make sense!

Socrates' said that "The un-examined life is not worth living."

Take time and examine your life to evaluate how healthy (spiritually/emotionally) you are; then reflect on the scriptures above. Next week I’ll talk more about humility and confession and why these two actions will bring about healing in our life.
