First Aid Know How – you never know when you might need it - at work or at home, playing sport or just out and about...
Some real handy Apps – Free to download
In the last couple of days, I’ve heard from two people who recently attended First Aid course then were required to use their newfound skills for real. One assisted an elderly gent who had a seizure and then fell and gashed his head in the supermarket, another performed CPR on her own child. Both were super pleased they had attended a First Aid course recently, but neither thought they’d actually ever need to be a first responder.
Free First Aid Apps to support first responders
I've been testing some freely available Apps. These are excellent and can be downloaded and kept on a smartphone to be used in an emergency. Both the St Johns and Red Cross Apps work offline, meaning people on farm could have these resources at their fingertips, regardless of cellphone coverage. These don’t take the place of full training, but would be better than nothing.
They talk user through CPR and how to use a defibrillator if one is available, and cover a wide range of common ailments - a great way to use technology to support both the patient and first responder in an emergency.
Check these out and let your teammates, colleagues and family know!
Where is the nearest defibrillator?
Another handy App shows the location of defibrillators (AEDs) in the area. In cellphone coverage it points users to the nearest device.
An AED can increase someone's chance of survival by up to 80% if applied immediately.
People were dying within 50 metres of an AED because no one knew it was there...
