Would You Consider Vandalizing Your Neighbors House?

This is a crazy question right?!? 

Yet, I see people basically do this kind of stuff daily in their online marketing of a business. 

For example, they friend request you, you accept, and they come over to your wall thanking you for the connection while posting ALL of their business links on your profile. 

Personally, this is a huge pet peeve of mine.  

I do NOT like it when people come and basically spray paint their graffiti (business links etc) on my profile or page. 

It's like being invited over to someones house and then tagging it with your name so everyone and their brother knows you were there. 

Kinda icky feeling, isn't it? 

If you are doing this type of marketing - STOP IT - NOW! 

No Hosing down your friends and their friends with your business! 

What I've mentioned above happens a lot on Facebook but I see some things here on Linkedin that aren't very professional and well, spammy. 

Shotgun Approach Email

You've gotten this email right? The one where someone you don't even know just shoots out a shotgun blast of an email to about 25-30 people hoping someone gets hit and is interested. 

I don't know, maybe I'm the odd person out here and other people actually enjoy getting hit with some email, service or product they have no need for and never even went looking for. 

How do you feel about it? 

When I see this strategy being used, I can't help but think to myself "there is a better way."  

What Are Some Better Ways To Market?

 

For starters, if you are going to market your business on Social Media, trying being social. 

You wouldn't go on a first date with a lady or gentleman and ask them to marry you right then and there, right?  You would get to know them a bit, spend some time chatting and getting to know one another. You might see if you have anything in common you could talk about. You would ask them questions and possibly see what they need or want in their lives and determine how you can fit in. 

Why is business any different?  

I'd like a little conversation (genuine by the way) before you hit me with a buy my thing pitch. 

If you are talking to people with only one thing in mind - Getting a sale or making money, people are going to see right through that and feel that right away. And guess what, it's an icky feeling. NO one likes being sold. 

People like to buy, but they don't want to be sold. 

Provide some value and sincerely be an option they could use. 

I used to love getting calls at my home in Las Vegas from carpet cleaning businesses.  They would call on a regular basis and pitch this great deal for my whole house without asking me ANY questions at all. 

Once  they've gone through their whole speech about why I should hire them today, I politely tell them I've got 2000 square feet of tile - no carpet. 

Of course, I then hear all about tile cleaning possibilities. 

My point is this: had they stop for a moment to concentrate on me and my needs, they could have skipped the whole elevator speech or script and simply found out I was not in the market for carpet cleaning.  Just wasn't going to buy. 

When you provide value to your customer or prospects, you know what they need, what their pain is, and you know what you have that might take care of it for them. 

The old saying "you can't sell ice to an Eskimo" 

Post pictures but stop tagging everyone in the alphabet

I get this a lot. Might be the downside of having a last name starting with a letter in top part of the alphabet.

Fortunately on Facebook, there are ways to keep this sort of stuff off your wall when people decide to sell some phone part and tag every one of their friends in the post. 

This is also the fastest way to get blocked, be labled a spammer and get yourself thrown in Facebook Jail. 

(Please don't create a group to spam your links in and add everyone you know there either) 

 

This is the only way I know how to market what do I do now?

 

If this post sounded just like you and how you market your business online, have no fear you can do better. 

I am painfully aware that many people just getting into the industry are being taught strategies like this by their upline. 

I know many are showing you the results they got doing this but they forget to mention how many accounts were closed down, etc because they were doing this style of marketing. 

Plus, not ALL of us are slick salesman types that can uh...talk their way out of anything. 

Look, I assume you want your business to be around for a while and if that's the case, the more you do business with integrity and ethics, the better that future will be. 

If you have a GREAT business you are building and promoting but you just have NO clue the best way to get what you offer in front of the people that actually want it. You have no idea how to build a list of people that want to know more, and eventually turn from leads, to followers, to customers...
