Would I want to work for you?
by Adrian Cheesman - Managing Director Demob Job Ltd

Would I want to work for you?

With unemployment reportedly below four percent, it is no wonder it is hard to find your next ideal employee, especially if you require an engineering or technical person.

But the story does not end there.

If you are carrying out interviews today, there is a strong possibility that the candidate who you are about to meet already has several job offers being presented to them.

So, what does that mean to you as a business owner or someone involved in the hiring process?

It means that if you do meet your ideal candidate today and consequently offer them the position, it is not a done deal.

You are effectively in a competition against other companies bidding to secure their interest and employment.

So, what can you do about it?

Quite simply you need to ensure that you leave a fantastic ‘not to be beaten’ impression; that candidate needs to leave your interview ‘wanting’ to work for you and your business.

Is that the impression you are leaving?

If it is not, you need to change things.

So where do you start?

As a business owner myself, I believe the first immediate thing you need to do is analyse every step of your candidate experience. Yes, I said every step.

Start with a meeting inviting everyone who is involved in the hiring process i.e. everyone who will have written and/or verbal contact with the candidate. Don’t forget the receptionist (if you have one).

Then map out every step of the candidate experience on a flip chart and then focus on each step placing yourself in the position of the candidate and asking the question:

‘What is the candidate experience like at this point?’

Your ‘map’ might look something like this click here.

Review and develop each step and create processes that deliver an excellent candidate experience.

In my opinion, your ideal scenario is that every person leaving your interview, strong or poor, leaves wanting to work for you.

I hope you find the above of interest, I’m always keen to hear about your experience and recruitment challenges.
