Would Corporate SA Still Champion Diversity and Inclusion if Legislation Did Not Exist?

Diversity and Inclusion is highlighted in Women's Month for obvious reasons. Women representation, especially black women, in high positions still has major gaps despite us having various transformation policies. This got me thinking whether there is resistance to transformation or whether our policies are not strong enough. It also begs this questions: Would Corporate SA still champion diversity and inclusion if Legislation did not exist?

School of Thought 1: Legislation-Driven Change

Proponents of this school of thought argue that corporate companies are primarily motivated by profit and would not prioritize diversity and inclusion initiatives if not compelled by legislation. They believe that without legal requirements, companies would not invest time and resources into creating inclusive workplaces, as it would not be seen as a business imperative. This perspective posits that companies will only adopt diversity and inclusion policies if forced to do so, as they are driven by self-interest and would not voluntarily take steps to address systemic inequalities.
