Would ChatGPT, a Microsoft-backed AI model, make Google run for its money?

Introduction

ChatGPT, the viral AI language model, needs no introduction. And, it would be not right on my behalf to let alone introduce this great piece of tech, which is ever-changing and ever-learning from its past millions of chat threads happening every minute. Thanks to all the media hype and devoted attention, it took less than a week for GPT to cross one million users. While Instagram took two months for the same.

Accordingly, for the sake of the introduction of this article, I left it on Chat GPT itself to enlighten you all and introduce itself. And, here are the results;

“I am an AI assistant trained by OpenAI. I am able to assist users with a wide range of tasks, including answering questions, providing information, and completing research. One of the unique things I can do is process and understand large amounts of text data quickly and accurately. This allows me to provide detailed and comprehensive responses to user inquiries and to engage in meaningful conversations with users. I am constantly learning and updating my knowledge, so I can always provide the most current and accurate information to my users.”

The TIMES has described ChatGPT as a “stunningly lifelike conversational language system”, which answers follow-up questions, challenges incorrect premises, rejects inappropriate requests and even admits its mistakes.

Open AI’s ChatGPT and DALL-E, the text-to-image AI model, have been categorically coined as ‘Generative AI’. Any form of AI that is capable of generating new and original content rather than simply analysing existing data is called Generative AI.??According to Forbes, the sudden emergence of generative AI has ignited a hysteria in Silicon Valley that no other topic in the world of technology could ever create.

My experience with GPT

  • Upon throwing several questions at the superhuman chatbot about various subjects, it was as if I was talking to the most intelligent professor of that very subject, thanks to its fine-tuned Reinforcement Learning model. However, sometimes ChatGPT could produce incorrect and inconsistent answers.
  • According to OpenAI’s official website, users have to conduct their own due diligence for fact-checking and authenticity of text produced by ChatGPT by giving a ‘Thumbs Up or Down’ review. Since ChatGPT is only an open-source project which is operating under an initial research preview phase currently.
  • Here are some of the snippets from my conversation with GPT;

As you might have noticed, I made some grammatical and spelling errors while framing questions, nevertheless, GPT, being a fantastic language model, could easily identify and neglect such errors and produce desired dialogue. After all, the model has been trained with the help of gigantic amounts of data written by humans available on the internet, including conversations.

ChatGPT Functionalities

  • ChatGPT has an endless array of possibilities when it comes to original content generation in the form of text. Some of the most popular use cases of GPT include writing essays, poems, dialogues, stories, scripts, reports and articles. Other unique use cases of GPT include conducting research, drafting sales pitches, emails and writing scripts for a YouTube video. Some people have even asked GPT to write song lyrics based on certain parameters.
  • If you are a programmer or a web developer, then ChatGPT can help you write and debug codes. Many web developers and programmers over the internet are fascinated by ChatGPT’s debugging functionalities, which not only explain bug but fixes it and explains the fix.
  • Individual entrepreneurs have been using GPT for developing aesthetic looking webpages, APIs, Micro SaaS, other softwares and potentially trade such digital products for an enormous profit. As I have mentioned before, the possibilities are endless and with the help of AI, one could simply create software applications more efficiently than ever before.

At the end of the day, ChatGPT and other generative AI models have something to offer to everyone be it the creative industry (writing, image and video production), research and analytics industry, web-developers and programmers, entrepreneurs and even students can greatly leverage the power of AI. They could possibly enhance their learning capabilities and acquire new and demanding skills with the help of these AI-powered tools like ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Vs Search Engines

The simple answer to the question: Can ChatGPT replace search engines is No, for sure. Since both of these tools have their own set of functionalities. An AI chatbot is obviously not designed to crawl, index and rank the webpages based on the relevance of search queries. Conversely, what GPT could potentially do, does ring alarm bells at Google.

Having ruled the internet search engine business for more than 20 years, it is certainly true that Google is currently witnessing an existential threat due to ChatGPT. It is a make-or-break situation at Google, which has forced the company to announce a ‘code red’ and completely overhaul its upcoming AI strategy. Even if AI powered chatbots could snap away 5% of Google’s market share that would be highly dreadful.

What ChatGPT has been doing is stripping off Google’s search engine queries’ traffic and eventually AdSense revenues because more and more people are using ChatGPT for their simple as well as complex research queries and getting near to desired results in a matter of seconds (Time savvy, isn’t it! ).

Recently, a Google executive was interviewed by TIME, who spoke that ChatGPT could severely upend the search giant’s business. The CEO, Sundar Pichai, has overturned numerous groups’ efforts and realigned them to respond towards threats that GPT poses while superimposing efforts towards Google’s AI strategy (LaMDA).

LaMDA, which is Google’s natural language processing (NLP) model, is a topic of discussion in a different article altogether.

Apparently, there has been news around the corner that Microsoft would be bringing ChatGPT capabilities into its Bing search results to counter Google Search. It becomes increasingly evident that after the mass use of GPT, the search engine industry would undergo quite a transformation, especially Google.?

ChatGPT and beyond

We are in the initial stage of AI-powered models and projects and there is a lot to come in the future undoubtedly. It would certainly lead us to a path of greater efficiency and higher economic productivity. Thus, it becomes imperative to advance and prepare for this shift by adapting to new technologies, and re-training for roles in growing industries like AI, blockchain and Metaverse. And most importantly, upskilling in order to be irreplaceable.??
