A worthy challenge.

During a recent conversation with a friend, we discussed the topics of motivation and incentive.??As fellow family men, golf junkies and sales professionals, this discussion explored our own personal motivation to “get better” and the potential for us to encourage the same commitment within others.??At the time of our conversation, Mike was about halfway through the book, ‘Drive’, by Daniel Pink and suggested that I give it a read.??

Early in the book, a passage immediately resonated with me.??Paraphrasing, Pink suggested that today’s knowledge work simply requires more creative thinking and problem solving than ever before. On its face, this is a good thing because people are naturally motivated to live and work within frameworks that deliver opportunities for self-direction, purposeful connection and less routine.??Pink further argues that the legacy methods of carrot/stick incentives cripple this type of creative work that skilled people generally seek.

I think the reason this idea stood out to me is that it succinctly captures the reason for my excitement about the work we are doing at BlueAlly.??We are in the midst of a transformational chapter in the company’s history and meaningful progress will require all of us at the company to think creatively (yet decisively) about what we author next.??It is imperative that we provide our team the autonomy and support to make an impact.??I am confident that we can make this happen.
