Is it worth your while to think about digital power?

Would you care to join a debate about the future of humanity? Is there a meaningful conversation happening? Do you have the time or inclination to be an informed participant? Or are you too preoccupied with other pressing things: quarterly targets, your fitness goals, caring for your family?

Is the “now” more persistent and demanding than the future to come. And so, will the future of humanity be decided in your absence as you were too busy feeding and clothing your kids. The very same children who will face its consequences.

Can you resist reading a book that starts by asking such questions. I could not. Yuval Noah Hariri’s “21 lessons for the 21st century”  is a compelling read.

Part 1, “The Technological Challenge” makes a strong case that the advancement of biotech and infotech has unleashed forces that may be stronger than those ever faced by humankind.

Machines taking over jobs is a known eventuality. But as we cede decision making ability to algorithms, humankind itself could be at risk. A small elite having control of concentrated data could fast become a digital dictatorship. Those who own data could own the future.

What is the right digital balance of power? It is worth thinking about. Read the book & look closely at your digital life!

Hi Shilpa, All of us are now taking that while to answer this question. Your post and the times now isn't a coincidence!

While I wasn’t as enamoured by Harari’s latest as much as the two earlier ones, I do think you’ve touched upon some of his more consistent themes - What are we building to? And where do we go from here? Thanks for revisiting this Shilpa Kumar!
