Worth Fighting For

I was just talking with my husband about my stepdaughter and having fun with her friends at her middle school dance. I said she is lucky because when I was in middle school it was hard to find people my age that I "fit in" with.
Maybe you were more like my stepdaughter or maybe you were like me going through school. Sadly, it doesn't always get easy as an adult especially when you are finding a workplace. You may not always fit in and you may at first but then you grow to need something new.
This was also a conversation with my friend and guest on Vet Life Reimagined, Dr. William Tancredi . Finding your fit in vet med can take time, and it can be very uncomfortable along the way. The veterinary profession has been criticized for its lack of diversity. I by no means disagree, but it doesn't mean that we have a range of backgrounds, perspectives, and opinions all of which I love to celebrate on the podcast.
Bill talks about finding the courage to be not only different but even be disliked when it comes to standing up for things that matter to us. I, personally, think it's good to find the things that are worth fighting for. I often think of my favorite part from The Lord of the Rings Two Towers. (It's worth just watching!) Those Hobbits often didn't "fit in" either.
You can find that bigger purpose and meaning in a solo doctor practice too. Bill leads his practice to research everything from new diagnostics and treatments to how AI can make their practice better. Luckily, he writes and shares this in his substack called Doc's FIRE. Even if you don't agree with everything someone says, it's worth understanding the opinions and even asking "What if that could be right?" As scientists, we should learn new things and adapt constantly.
There are a lot of interesting conversations in our episode, so I hope you check it out on audio & YouTube.

1 年It’s worth fighting for…since most new ideas, concepts and techniques are NOT popular in the beginning but it takes someone with courage and determination to stick with it despite the current beliefs.

1 年Those with the courage to speak up are almost never popular immediately - and most people only jump on the bandwagon when it’s clear the majority agrees and it feels safe to do so. Some of the “controversial” opinions I’ve shared about the vet profession are not controversial at all - at least from the perspective of vets sharing their opinions behind closed doors. Kudos to vets like William Tancredi for having the courage to speak up!
