The worst thing you can do as a speaker

The worst thing you can do as a speaker

Really? How many times have people shared some of the things you can do as a speaker that will not help you?

This one thing will. Because the worst thing you can do as a speaker/presenter is tell a boring story.

Ah! You get that! But no one shares with you that your story is boring. Yes, face it, you are boring whenever you talk about you!

Aw, no way! I heard you groan! Every other speaking coach tells you to SHARE YOUR STORY.

Am I right? All the advice you get is to tell a story.

It's not that you shouldn't tell a story. Unfortunately few people really know how to tell a story! Here is an example of someone who does speaking and maybe even gets awards? https://youtu.be/n0NEb430UCU?si=7WE58WsgpnXGAy6C a one minute clip.

But it is like everything else we are told. They never give us all of the information.

Why is that? Maybe they don't know. Do you?

The secret to what will bring you success is telling a story that involves your audience.

It is called Storytizing and it means you tell your story but you use your audiences memories, emotions and experiences to involve and invest them in your story.

It is a simple process that no one is teaching you. Everyone says, tell a story, everyone says share your story but no one is showing you how to be entertaining. And giving a talk, a speech, any presentation means you have to be entertaining.

What if my material is boring. Make it entertaining. What is it really dry? Make it fun.

Storytizing is the only way to include your audience in your talks.

Hit me up for the formula to help you become the best presenter in your office.

Great points about storytelling Steve. The story must be compelling and you are so right about getting the audience involved. A great word to use is: IMAGINE and then pause. Keep up your great work!

Steve, as a CSP, international keynote and TEDx Speaker, I DO agree, but you only told people what not to do or what to do but it would be good for you to do a follow up newsletter on specifics that people can do to make their story engaging and not boring and HOW to be entertaining. Just a suggestion to take it a step further. All good and yes, a good story teller can move mountains.
