WORRIED U.S. WORKERS?
A couple of recent surveys from major research centers gave some interesting insights into the American worker’s view of artificial intelligence.? A few of the findings:
?
·?????? 52% of U.S. workers are worried about the future impact of AI in the workplace
·?????? 32% think it will lead to fewer job opportunities for them in the long run
·?????? 33% of workers say they feel overwhelmed
·?????? 16% say at least some of their work is currently done with AI
·?????? Another 25% say at least some of their work?can?be done with AI
·?????? 6% of workers think AI will improve their job prospects in the long run
·?????? 32% say it will lead to?fewer?opportunities for them
·?????? 31% say it will not make much difference
·?????? Workers in information and technology, banking, finance, accounting, real estate and insurance say AI will lead to more job opportunities for them in the long run.
?
Goldman Sachs Research had some interesting comments:
·?????? AI could drive a 7% (or almost $7 trillion) increase in global GDP
·?????? Productivity growth could increase 1.5% over a 10-year period
·?????? AI systems will have a major impact on employment markets around the world
?
A study by economist David Autor said:
·?????? 60% of today’s workers are employed in occupations that didn’t exist in 1940
·?????? 85+% of employment growth over the last 80 years is explained by the technology-driven creation of new positions
?
What do I see in these studies?? A few thoughts:
·?????? A huge transition in the marketplace is almost ready to explode
·?????? An enormous number of new products, applications, programs and systems will be unleashed in the next few years
·?????? Training programs for both individuals and organizations will be required by almost everyone: Decision-makers, managers, supervisors and workers
·?????? Those workers who have put in the time and effort to prepare will flourish
·?????? Those workers who waited too long to take action or are unprepared, will either diminish their roles and move lower in the organization, or be asked to find another job
·?????? Upgraded skills will be needed to keep up with the continuous progression of newer applications.? New AI tools will be layered on top of existing software.
?
Actions that are needed:
·?????? Ask your organization for courses or training to provide you with new skills, with either the basics you’ll need, or advanced skills that will be required
·?????? If your organization won’t train you, get those skills yourself through on-line programs and self-learning.? Be concerned with organizations that won’t train their own people.
·?????? Research your industry, level and function to find out the trend and what you need to learn over the next year in order to be relevant and a high contributor.
·?????? A high performer today, with no training, will be a mediocre performer in two years or less.
