The Common Skin Problem - Acne Vulgaris

A Small Scar on Face draws more Attention than a Big Ulcer in Stomach. My observation as a doctor is that Most patients are over concerned about any Facial Problem and Rightly so as May be Face is the Index of Mind though it can prove Wrong majority of the times.The Concern is Rationale as one would always try to present with a Beautiful Expression from a Flawless face.

Acne  is the disease of young and adolescence especially Girls.Girls also happen to be more concerned and make it a concern for the whole friend circle, family,,,,, . Every girl would like to downscale her friend on basis of An acne spot rather than other negative characters in life.

 It effects the Sebaceous glands especially in face . The typical Lesions involve comedones, papules, pustules and nodules. It usually effects the face and upper trunk. There is increased sebum production, abnormal keratinization, proliferation of anaerobic bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes.

This Predisposes to rupture of the pilosebaceous unit with extravasation into the surrounding dermis, resulting in sterile, inflammatory papules, pustules, and cysts. It can cause Severe Scarring and Cosmetic Disfigurement.

Though a normal pubertal Spike of Hormonal levels is the usual cause in case of young but sometimes association with Polysystic Ovaries (PCOD) and other Endocrinological Abnormalities can be the Underlying Cause. So not to be taken Non Seriously.

Differentiation from Acne Rosacea is needed as the condition represents a different subtype of Acne.

Patients are advised to take Low Fatty Diets with less spicy foods and a healthy Exercise Programme. Self Medication and use of Topical Steroids should be Avoided. Drugs can be given Topically or orally as well. Most Efficient Agents used are e  Benzoyl peroxide , Tetracycline, Erythromycin  , Clindamycin and Adapelene and Tazarotene . But one should always seek a Dermatological Consultation as some of the drugs are contraindicated especially in Pregnancy .
