Worried about CHANGING jobs or careers? You're not alone!

I am going to age myself, because I grew up in the times where the majority of people picked a career path (or job) and stuck with it until they retired. A large number of us still struggle with changing jobs or career paths partly due to this mindset and partly due to fear or anxiety. The fear of being called a "job hopper" or anxiety of making a change due to the unknown or even age has stopped many of us from taking a new job and a leap of faith.

In recent years there has been a change in this mindset of being in one role or with one company for your entire career, even being on just one career path. As someone that works in recruiting, I have seen this shift first hand, and to be honest...I'm here for it! That's not to say I do not question when a candidate has moved jobs frequently over a very short period of time, because I do, but I also know that in today's work environment other factors are in play much more so than "back in the day." Company culture, work-life balance, and benefits top the list of reasons why people are changing jobs and careers more so than now than ever. If you are thinking of making a change, I wanted to highlight a few things for you to keep in mind and wish you luck on your new adventure!

Changing Jobs:

  • Be open and honest with why you left previous roles, as much as you are comfortable sharing. This will help recruiters get to know you as well.
  • Give proper notifications of departure, if possible (some situations do not allow this). Remember the business world is smaller than it seems, don't burn a bridge unless absolutely necessary!
  • Update your resume with each change and new skill earned.
  • Give each job the time to "let the dust settle" before making any drastic changes.
  • Advocate for yourself!

Changing Career Paths:

  • Research, research, research! Know as much as you can going into the new field of choice!
  • Take classes and sit for certifications so that you show you are willing to learn.
  • Have a well thought out response to the question - why are you changing careers/industries?
  • Be open to starting at entry or mid level roles, even if you were "top" of your field previously.
  • Be humble, you will likely be learning from someone with less years of work experience, but they have been in this field longer.
  • ASK QUESTIONS!
  • Remember you can always go back to your previous field of work if you make a change and realize you do not enjoy the work!

While this is just a brief list of things to help ease you into a work related change, it is certainly not all inclusive. Make sure you are doing what you feel is best for you, and be your own advocate in all situations! Best of luck in your career adventures!

Hey Emma - Good work on the article!

Great article. It really resonated with me because as someone who started out in the legal field, I will soon be sitting for my first certification test in contract management. It’s great when someone can use their skills in a new way.
