Wormsley Cricket - Mike Gatting, the first Sir Paul Getty Women's XI and key supporter NM Capital

As we continue to protect Sir Paul Getty’s legacy to the game (and further develop the facilities at Wormsley to ensure that it remains a ground that cricketers around the world aspire to be invited to play at), we are delighted to announce that Mike Gatting OBE has accepted the honorary role as the first President of Wormsley Cricket.

Mike Gatting says, “Wormsley is a very special place to play cricket and holds fond memories for me, as I’m sure it does for numerous cricketers from around the world who have been fortunate enough to play here over the last 25 years. I’m delighted to play my part in ensuring that cricket remains a vibrant part of the Estate for many years to come.

As President, I’m pleased to announce that this season we’ll see the first Sir Paul Getty Women’s XI, captained by Charlotte Edwards, take on the FairBreak International XI on Wednesday 30th May, as part of a broader Day of Gender Equality. The FairBreak team will be captained by Suzie Bates (NZ) and will include international cricketers from 11 countries including Australia, West Indies, Oman, Vanuatu, Rwanda, USA, Canada, India, Hong Kong and Singapore. We’re also delighted to welcome Canterbury CC on tour from Australia in June, The Sussex Martlets in July, and a third visit from Cricket Touring Club de Flamingo’s (Netherlands) in September. I would encourage anyone who loves their cricket to come and enjoy a day at Wormsley - for regular spectators / guests we have launched the Wormsley Cricket Club Membership, with a dedicated members’ area and access to every game throughout the season.”

Mark Getty, says, “I am delighted that Mike Gatting has agreed to be our first President of Wormsley Cricket. He is a bastion of the game, having played 79 tests for England - 23 as captain and was named one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the year in 1984. Cricket remains a key pillar of our activities at Wormsley, alongside the broader sporting activities and the performing arts that we support across the estate. I’m pleased to see our growing fixture schedule, the first Sir Paul Getty Women’s XI and the launch of the Wormsley Cricket Club Membership.”

Simon Tremlin, Cricket Manager at Wormsley, says “We have enjoyed seeing Mike play at Wormsley over the years and are very happy he has agreed to be our first President at this exciting time. We are also delighted to announce that NM Capital will be our primary supporter of Wormsley Cricket for the coming season.” Chris St George, founder of NM Capital, says “I have been fortunate to be involved with Wormsley Cricket for the last 20 years, playing both for the Sir Paul Getty XI and against, with the Combined Services, Pilgrims and Eton Ramblers. I have known Simon and Mike for many years and NM Capital is delighted to play a part in continuing the tradition of top class cricket at Wormsley. We are very much looking forward to the new season.”

Simon concludes “Cricket has been a huge part of the estate for the last 25 years and with the support of Mike, Chris and NM Capital we are looking forward to a successful season, to welcoming our new members to the Wormsley Cricket Club (more details can be found on the events page at www.wormsleyestate.com) and to starting the planning for our 30th anniversary and beyond!”

About Wormsley Cricket The first match at Wormsley, in May 1992, saw the Sir Paul Getty XI play host to the MCC, and to this day, the Sir Paul Getty XI continues to be a cornerstone of cricket at Wormsley with annual matches against the Eton Ramblers, the Arabs and I Zingari - teams steeped in history & tradition and close to the heart of Sir Paul's original vision of Wormsley Cricket. Befitting Wormsley’s world-wide reputation as ‘one of the most beautiful grounds in England’, the number and variety of matches has increased in recent years - with the addition of a limited number of corporate & charity cricket days, private games and representative matches (such as the Minor Counties Finals) alongside the traditional Sir Paul Getty XI and village games.

About Wormsley Located in the Chilterns outside Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire (Jct 5, M40), Wormsley is a private estate and has been home to the Getty Family since 1985. The Estate is first mentioned in official records in 1106, and since 1547 has been in only two families; the Scrope’s/Fane’s and the Getty’s. Primarily a private family home, for a limited number of days each year, the Estate is available for a small number of private individuals and organisations to hold events such as meetings, conferences, private dining experiences, festivals, corporate days, family days, cricket and country sports days, private parties and weddings. The beauty of the landscape, traditional Chiltern buildings, roads, gardens & woodlands, also make the Estate an excellent location for commercial TV & Film production.
